Puimisson is a quiet bastide village, built around the chateau (which is built on the site of a Roman fort as a hollow square). The village is very convenient for the mountains, (Parc Haut Languedoc) about 25km to the north, and the beaches about 20km to the south. The nearest beach is Valras Plage which has a casino, shops, restaurants and clubs etc. Neighbouring beaches Seringnan Plage and Vendres Plage are wilder with no amenities. Beziers, the nearest large town, is 10km to the south, and is a mix of medieval, with a pedestrianised old town remembered for the Cathar massacres in the 13th Century and an elegant 17th Century addition, where the visionary Paul Riquet planned the building of the Canal du Midi to join the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean. This is an area of great historical and contemporary artistic interest. Great food and wine. Carcassonne is an easy drive away, as is Nimes, Perpignan,Collioure and Pezenas. Spain is a one and a half hour drive on the A9.
