The Port House, Marina Quay, 19th century waterfront house

House on the Thau Lagoon, built in the 19th century, the current owners’ grand parents settled at the Port House just before WWII. A family home during many years, the Port House has the nice atmosphere of France past. Nicely and fully renovated in 2002 to the highest standards including en-suite bathrooms and a modern kitchen. The Port House is well situated right on the quayside of the marina of Marseillan, a charming old fishing port. The house has lovely views of both the port and the seawater lagoon, Etang de Thau, famous for its oysters and mussels. From the living and dining rooms one can watch yachts and pleasure boats gliding in from the lagoon. Montpellier, Carcassone and Perpignan airports are within one hour’s drive from Marseillan. Direct Ryanair flights are available from London, Manchester and Southampton to Perpignan.

The Porthouse and its amenities

You can enjoy very nice holidays in Marseillan with all amenities just a short walk away to several restaurants, the baker, a supermarket, the post office, a very good fishmonger, bicycle hire, and local wine producers. Marseillan is also where the aperitif 'Noilly Prat' is made. Do take the guided tour of the winery opposite the Port House. A wide playground area for children is 200m away. Windsurfing and sailing school is only 400m away. 4km away is Marseillan plage: long beach of 15kms stretching all the way to Sète. There is a traditional French market in the centre of Marseillan every Tuesday morning all year round, and a craft market every Friday evening in July and August. There is a large Flea Market at Marseillan Plage every Saturday and Sunday all year round. At 6.30 pm on Sunday evenings the Maire and the Tourist Office at Marseillan Plage have a welcome meeting for all visitors to the town.

Places of interest

Cap d'Agde 14km: 'Aqualand', (huge water-slides, etc.) 27-hole golf course, boat hire, deep sea fishing, scuba-diving, aquarium. Agde 10km: Old historic town and fishing port, founded by the Ancient Greeks. Nice market, excellent seafood restaurants. Beziers 25 km: Major market town, noted for its bull-fight 'Feria' in August. Pezenas 20 km: Attractive medieval town. Narbonne 47 km: Famous cathedral. Montpellier 55 km: Large university town. Carcassonne 115 km: Largest fortified medieval town. Nimes 95 km: Roman temple and arena. Perpignan 120 km: Palace of kings of Mallorca.

Climate

Marseillan's climate has delighted many people at all times of the year, the locals claim more than 300 days a year sunshine. One can regularly sit outside a French cafe enjoying a hot drink and a croissant in the sunshine on a morning during the winter! Around the harbour, have a delicious meal in a local restaurant on an evening in February and start your BBQ on our terrace in March. Should you want to sail all year round, would you give it a try on the sheltered water of the Thau lagoon?

Other Activities Wind-surfing and sailing school 400 m away

Golf Information:

A year of sunshine to enjoy Languedoc golf courses. There’s a huge variety of courses in this corner of southern France, to suit players at all levels. Some, by the coast, are reminiscent of the classy designer courses on Florida’s seaboard, others in the mountains are more like Scotland’s traditional links: you get a great game plus great scenery. Here are the 3 golf courses located within 20 to 50 minutes drive from the Port House 1)Golf St Thomas: this course is located 40 minutes from the house. Open all year from 08:00 to 20:00. The course at Saint-Thomas, set in the wild scrubland known as the ‘garrigue’, has a typically Mediterranean feel. The 18-hole course (par 72, 6130 metres) will suit all levels of player, from beginner to expert. Every hole has its own character: wooded, hilly, lakeside or straightforward. 2)Golf de Lamalou-Les-Bains: this course is located 50 minutes from the house. Open all year from 09.00. It has a fabulous setting at the foot of the Caroux mountain in the foothills of the Cévennes, with the river Orb running by. The wooded course with its three lakes is a pleasure to play whatever your level. 3)Golf Cap d’Agde. This course is located 20 minutes from the house. All year from 08:30 to 18:30 and from 01/07 to 31/08 from 07:30 to 20:00. Ronald Fream, one of the world’s top golf course designers, created this inventive 18 hole course (par 72, 6279 metres), set in colour-splashed scrubland on the Mediterranean coast.

20.11.04 Wonderful old house with plenty of character and all modern cons. Lovely views from balcony. Sampled much local produce (food&liquid) and would recommend it all. Hope to be back.
28.06.05 A shining family home ; delicious food ; excellent local wines ; and Monsieur Robert is extraordinarily helpful and friendly, for which we thank him. We look forward to a return visit.
17.06.06 Our stay was a pleasure. The house is tastefully decorated and well equipped. The children enjoyed both the playroom and the pool. We appreciated the calm surroundings and the harbour view. Marseillan is also a very good place either to go to the beaches or for sightseeing inland.
30.09.06 We've had a great week... passed too quickly ! Really great to have such a homely base !
25.05.07 The House is fantastic, well equipped and full of everything you could need... It has a wonderful 'home' feel... The numerous bathrooms, constant supply of hot water and beautiful views were fantastic. We'll be back.
