Smartly restored gite, entire ground floor of an old winemaker's house in one of the warmest parts of southern France. Newly decorated and furnished with an attractive combination of antique and modern. 3 double bedrooms, newly installed bathroom with shower, large lounge with new kitchen and dining areas. Spacious play area (former cave with original wine press) with table tennis. Peaceful garden dining area with shade. Private beach with picnic area and hammocks, superb river swimming. Stunning views of river, mountains & medieval hill village of Vieussan. Walk across fine 19th century bridge to small village with café-restaurant (which has good play area for children), wine and food outlets, tennis courts, donkey rides. Local canoe base. In the in the regional nature park of Upper Languedoc, an excellent year-round centre for walking, river sports and bird watching. Béziers & Pézenas 40 minutes, Mediterranean beaches 1 hour. Vieussan is a small, unspoilt medieval village in a beautiful section of the Gorges de l'Orb (known for its canoeing), beneath striking mountains and surrounded by vines. Within ten minutes' drive are the pools of the Gorges d'Héric, Roquebrun with its Jardin Mediterranean, Olargues ('un des plus beaux villages de France') and a fine choice of vineyards ranging from large, professional operations to small traditional winemakers. There are excellent weekly markets in Saint Chinian, centre of the local appellation, the spa town of Lamalou, and Bédarieux (all 15-25 minutes away). Within 45 minutes drive are historic Pézenas with its wonderful Saturday market and Béziers with its broad tree-lined avenues. A little further afield are the fine city of Montpellier, many kilometres of Mediterranean beaches, Millau with its wonderful new viaduct designed by Norman Foster, the Gorges du Tarn, the Pyrenees (visible from some higher points on clear days) and (only 3 hours' drive) Barcelona.

Notes: Down some steps from your living room you have a shaded terrace with dining table in our walled garden, planted with aloes and other Mediterranean plants. Help yourself to cherries and figs in season. Our private river beach, with hammocks and picnic table under the shade of old trees and Vieussan's historic bridge, is down three terraces from the top level of the garden. There is a shallow area suitable for children to play, and access for river swimming. The accommodation is all on one floor and easily entered, and in this sense is suitable for the infirm as well as small children. (There is only one step within the accommodation.) However the outside eating area is the top terrace of the garden and does require descending ten steps, feasible for some elderly people but not for wheelchair users. Access to our river beach involves going down less well made steps and paths, and is not suitable for the infirm. However you can drive to more accessible public beaches in the area.

Beautiful Riverside Retreat

You can't fault this gite's position set within the stunning Orb Valley with fantastic views over the river looking on to the hillside village. We had private access to our own beach (with hammocks!) and terraced gardens, which gave us plenty of options of places to sit, eat, and relax - and even play petanque! The gite itself is very spacious, and tastefully refurbished so that it preserves the feel of the building's history. It has a large open-plan kitchen and lounge, and a wonderful shower room. The owners were very helpful with local knowledge of places to visit etc. and there is quite a bit of information inside the gite itself, which we found useful in helping us to orientate ourselves in the first few days. On arrival we found ourselves instantly relaxed and in awe of the serenity of the valley - we even saw some beautiful Golden Orioles in the fig tree outside the kitchen window (apparently a very rare bird and local to this area). We had a fantastic holiday and hope to return very soon!

My husband and I stayed at Le Roque for a week in June 2009 and had a wondeful time. The property istelf has been sensitively renovated so although there are all mod-cons (even a dishwasher) you also never forget that you are in the south of France staying in a winemakers house. We loved it. The garden was beautiful and the private river beach amazing.
Now Ive written this I want to be back there!

The owners are lovely; they live in their own house seperate from the gite and we never saw or heard them, but it was useful to know they were just a few metres away if we did need anything.

Overall, brilliant experience and it comes highly reccomended.

p.s the bar across the river is def worth a stroll across to if only for their incredible selection of beers!

Vieussan

As we travel to Vieussan more often because of familyvisits, we didn't find a house as well situated (along the river), as well renovated(as it was an old wine-cave, the wine-press is still there) and as nice as this one.
Besides a large livingroom with an open kitchen there are 3 nice bedrooms, a large bathroom with a good shower and a big open space with a ping-pong table, which our children enjoyed very much.
When we arrived the beds were already made and the whole place was cleaned up very well. The owners of the house gave us a warm welcome.
The house is situated along the river Orb just over the bridge that leads to the villages Boisseson and Berlou. From the livingroom you have a beautiful view on the village of Vieussan. The garden goes down in several terrasses to the river where you will find a personal beach and also two hammocks.
Just threehundred meters away, on the other side of the river, you can find the cafe\restaurant Le Lézard Bleu, where you can eat very good meals and taste wines of the region.
We enjoyed our stay very much and we can recommend it to everybody.

just perfect

We, 2 children and us, had a wonderful week in the old winary. The house is spacious and cool, even when it is hot outside. The view from the windows overlooking the river took my breath away. The garden going down to the river is exiting and we had a daily swim in the river.
And the couple running the house are wonderfull. They are there for you, but the also know how to stay away. We will definetaly return to this super place.
