Comfortable Villa with Private Pool in Languedoc National Park
Watching soaring eagles from the swimming pool – there can’t be many places to do this, but this is one of them. This detached villa is comfortable and well equipped for self-catering, but the bonus is the range of facilities to experience the real joy of this magnificent part of the Languedoc – the outdoor life. Although close to the centre of the village, the villa is on a large plot with spectacular mountain scenery in all directions. The secluded, spacious sun terrace faces a wooded hill full of wildlife, and has a private pool on one side and a large shaded dining area on the other. Meals can be prepared sociably using the summer kitchen and large barbecue next to the dining area. There are play areas to the front and side of the villa. The nearby tennis court is free. The area is a paradise for walkers. Horse riding for various levels of ability is available near the village. And just in case it rains, there is a full sized table tennis in the large garage. Ample safe parking.

St-Gervais/Mare is an ancient Canton town set in the breathtaking scenery of the Cévennes Mountains. Although the surrounding countryside is very popular with the French, the town is not a tourist centre. However, there are some interesting sites and many pleasant walks. Within a few yards of the villa is St-Gervais le Vieux, with its stepped streets leading up past medieval houses to the ancient chateau, now in ruins and used as a cemetery. The tourist information office, ~200 yards from the villa, has a small museum dedicated mainly to the old crafts of the town, and can supply maps for walks and details of places of interest. The GR653 that passes through the village is part of the pilgrim path to Santiago de Compostela in NW Spain. The GR7 can be picked up a few km from the town for a ‘walk’ up the Caroux, a peak rising to 1091m. There are more major attractions within `day out' distance than one could possibly visit in a fortnight. There is a golf course at Lamalou-les-Bains.
Local activities swimming, tennis, walking, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, mountain biking

To allow cleaning, the pool is not available on the morning of departure. Central heating is available for winter rentals from the first week in October to the last week in April. The pool is closed and the water supply to the summer kitchen and outside toilet is cut off from mid October. As the dishwasher is old and built in to such an extent that it cannot be quickly repaired or replaced, its availability cannot be guaranteed. We have had the same model in the UK for nearly 20 years and it has never gone wrong.

| Notes: | Most of the accommodation is on the first floor, including the large sun lounge, salon (lounge/dining room), kitchen, three bedrooms, bathroom, and separate WC. There is separate access on the ground floor to the family room with en-suite salle d'eau (shower, hand basin, bidet, wc). The table in the salon is for 6 and in the kitchen for 4. The TV is wide screen and the video plays region 2 DVDs and music CDs but not VC. The washing MC and full sized table tennis are in the integral garage. 2 cars can be parked in the garage and 3 inside the property. The swimming pool is approximately 5m*3m*1.33m deep. As there is no shallow end it is not suitable for unsupervised non-swimmers. It is fenced to prevent unsupervised access by young children. The summer kitchen is equipped with a sink, 4 ring gas hob, fridge and microwave and is next to a large BBQ and outside table that will seat 12 easily. Ask the owners for more details on bicycles. |
St-Gervais-sur-Mare
We call it the village, but although the town has less than 1000 inhabitants it has many amenities, including: 2 bakers; butcher; grocer; tabac with petrol pump; chemist; bar/café; restaurant at trout farm; pizzeria; 2 hairdressers; post office; doctor’s surgery and dentist. The butcher, the bakers, the grocer and the tabac are usually open on Sunday morning. The free tennis court maintained by the council is ~200 yards from the villa. Although small, the community is very active and organises many events throughout the year. The summer fête lasts 4 days with show bands every night, boule contests, children's games and a dinner in the square.
Equipment
So that you know what not to bring, the following are supplied: hair-dryer; iron and board; shoe brushes; 4 tennis racquets (no balls); 4 table tennis bats (no balls); boules; badminton set (cheap quality); foot pump; DVD/CD player but no discs; cool box and packs; and ceiling and table top fans. Each bed has a summer duvet, winter duvet and a padded cleanble over-mattress. The kitchen is well equipped and it is unlikely that you will require anything other than washing up liquid. Barbecue tools are provided but no charcoal. There is an extension lead with four UK sockets for battery chargers etc. A welcome pack is provided to help you through to morning in case you arrive late. This includes 2 bottles of wine, 2 litres UHT milk, 2 litres orange juice, coffee, filters, sugar, toast, jam, new dish-cloth, new scourer, toilet rolls, kitchen towel and dishwasher tablets. Bring your own favourite tea bags (there is not much choice locally and they are expensive).
How to get there.
There are low cost flights to the following airports within sensible driving distance. In rough order of driving time: Montpellier; Perpignan; Carcassonne; Nimes; Girona; and Barcelona. Nice is worth considering if it saves you a significant drive at your end. The Spanish airports have the advantage of cheaper car hire. Girona is next to the motorway and only takes 45 minutes longer than Perpignan. The owners have used all of these and can give further advice. Driving from the North of England is fairly easy with one overnight stop. The roads from Calais are good, and south of Paris they are cheap as well. A good tip: book Eurotunnel early and/or choose off peak travel. The fare is then very cheap, especially if you book early. Apart from mid August, the roads are quiet on Saturday afternoon and Sunday. Discounts on channel ferries are available through holiday-rentals. More advice on request.
Other Activities boule, table tennis, wildlife spotting. St Gervais fête. The famous Beziers féria. Mushrooming in autumn.
