Photos and Description of this Collioure holiday apartment 3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 6

The Garden Apartment is a comfortable, well equipped home for our guests, situated in the historic old town with great views around the harbour, the Mediterranean and mountains and one of the largest gardens in the area. It is on the top floor of a traditional French 'bourgeois' house and retains many original features. The kitchen, dining and lounge area is large and opens onto a timber-decked terrace with teak furniture, leading to the gardens. The kitchen is large, fully equipped, including a breakfast bar, with views to the harbour & mountains. The dining area is adjacent to the traditional Catalan fireplace, with views across the old town to the mountains. The lounge is large, airy & cool in summer. The bedrooms provide a lot of flexibility: 1 triple, 1 double and 1 single bedroom. Velux windows give good ventilation in the summer. Private terraced gardens to the side have fruit trees (plums, figs, apricots), flowers, lawns, - good for relaxing, outdoor dining & admiring views!

Port Vendres, adjacent to Collioure, is a natural deep water harbour 1st used by the Greeks in 8BC, & remains a major import point for fruit: you will see freighters from around the world in the harbour. If you like seafood you have arrived in heaven because Port Vendres has a large fishing fleet. The famous fish market has a great degustation bar with every type of shellfish, including oysters and white wine. Restaurants in Port Vendres are wonderful. A stroll along the quay will take you past fishing boats, usually a freighter, often a cruise ship, the ferry, and the yacht harbour. There are excellent beaches close by & down the coast you pass Pauliles with its superb beach, Banyuls, and into Spain to enjoy the Costa Brava. Cadaques has the home of Salvador Dali. Here the Pyrenees reach down to the sea, the walking is good, either through vine covered hillsides or in the high mountains. Local wines are excellent as are 240 sunny days/yr.

Notes: We have 2 private gardens: (1) an enclosed wooden terrace (24 sq m) surrounded by herbs, climbing roses, bougainvillea, & a magnificent plum tree (24 sq m); (2) a traditional Catalan terraced garden (400 sq m) rambling up from our garden gate in the square, bordered by steps and partly enclosed by dry stone walls, providing views of the mountains, port, Mediterranean. The steps are steep which makes push chair access difficult. The Catalan garden has lawns on some terraces, fruit trees (cherry, fig, plum, apricot, mulberry, pear, apple, grapes, lemons, olives), bushes, flowers, rock garden. There is also a covered patio (9 sq m) adjacent to main entrance to the apartment for shoes/beach/fishing items etc. Internally, the staircase to the bedrooms is wooden and partly spiral. Toddlers and young children will need supervision in the garden & apartment. We have a large selection of novels for your enjoyment, plus DVDs, children's toys, beach accessories & ample fresh fruit to pick!

Small Footprint on the Planet? : Don't want to fly? Take a train! For approx £110 roundtrip you can pick up a train in London at about 8:15am, change once at Lille at lunchtime, and arrive in Perpignan by about 7pm. Then you take a final 20 minute train trip down the coast from Perpignan to Port Vendres. While in Port Vendres you can take the local buses up and down the coast. Alternatively you can take your car on one of the ferries and drive down. My brother does the Callais to Port Vendres trip in 11 1/2 hrs, or if he takes overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo its 8-9 hrs. I tend to take a leisurely 2-3 days, enjoying the scenery on the backroads. JUNE 2008 REVIEW :'Just wanted to let you know we had a fantastic holiday in Port Vendres and we all loved your house. My elder son, Alex (aged 4) loved all the bits and pieces in the house and the boats in the harbour. Thanks also for all the info on the local area. It was great to have some insider knowledge.' TS, London

Guest Book from June 2007: (1) Charles O. from Norfolk: 'We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Although we like being near the sea, we're not particularly after beaches so your lovely garden was an absolute bonus. We spent two or three days just enjoying the sun, the shade and the view without going out at all. We were delighted with Port Vendres and very pleased we were there rather than the neighboring costal villages. PV has the right scale and is a busy working community that we found appealing. Evelyne (housekeeper) certainly is a treasure and full of information. She was very tolerant of our version of French and it was good to talk at some length. Evelyne, the wine and flowers that we found on arrival, and your written information all made us feel most welcome.' (June 2007). (2) Eleanor H, from Germany, June 2007:'We had a wonderful time in Port Vendres, we found it had a very real air about it. The apartment was great. There was everything we needed. Fabulous!'(June 2007).

GUEST QUOTES: Judith Squires & family, August 2006: 'Just a note to let you know that we had a wonderful time at the apartment - we really didn't want to leave and we all want a return visit! We didn't even take the car anywhere for the first 4 days - just explored the local bays and beaches during the day and pottered around watering the garden in the evenings, cooking fabulous fresh fish on the barbeque and sipping great wines - bliss! The local people were all very friendly and helpful and the boys felt confident enough to go out by themselves and practice their French. The apartment is fabulously well equipped and you've obviously put a lot of thought into it. It really felt like being a welcome guest in someone's home. In short it was a fabulous holiday and can't fault it at all! Can't wait for the next visit.'

Other Activities: deep sea fishing, wind surfing, snorkelling

Fantastic Holiday

RichHarii Bristol, England
Review Submitted: August 12, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
My family and I stayed for 8 nights in this lovely garden appartment. The location is ideal with an abundance of picturesque beaches close to hand and plenty of restaurants in Port Vendre and the surrounding area.

The appartment offered plenty of space for our group which included two couples and my nine year old son - with space for another young child. The garden terrace is ideallic.

I would have rated this excellent however we were unfortunate to have two nights of festive celebration in the port which interrupted our sleep. However, this was down to timing of our stay and didn't reflect on the apartment or location.

Would go back.

September Getaway

JulieF Norwich
Review Submitted: February 23, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2008
My partner & I together with a couple of friends were fortunate enough to spend a 5 night 'getaway' in Port Vendres staying in the Garden Apartment at the end of Sept 2008. Wow, what a wonderful location & a beautiful apartment. The apartment is large, airy & very clean & comfortable & so well equipped, there was everything that you could possibly want. We had breakfast on the terrace every morning & although we ate out on 4 of the nights it was still warm enough to sit under the stars in the garden for a nightcap when we got back. The information pack was invaluable & covered virtually everything. Port Vendres itself is absolutely charming & the locals were so friendly & welcoming, the surrounding area affords some quite breathtaking scenery & is perfect whether you want to walk, drive or make use of the local transport. We hired a car but we did lots of walking along the coast & into the nearby hills. Although it was end of Sept there were still a good selection of local restaurants open & the food was sensational. Our 5 night getaway, to re-charge our batteries certainly did the trick & we will definitely be going back but for longer next time. Thank you Karla.

Spring in the garden apartment

Four Canadians Toronto, Ontario, Canada
Review Submitted: February 8, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2008
We stayed in the Garden Apartment for a week in March 2008. While there, the weather was warm and pleasant and plants were just beginning to bloom. We arrived late in the evening, and when we awoke the next day, we were delighted to find that the apartment was spacious, sunny, and very clean. The neighbouthood around the apartment is friendly and welcoming. Our young teenage daughters immediately were comfortable exploring the area by themselves. We took a number of day trips in the surrounding country side in France, and in northern Spain. The directions in Karla's guidebook were helpful and easy to follow. The area is spectacularly beautiful, yet has retained a relaxed pace, perfect for a restful family holiday. We highly recommend this area for a vacation, and we look forward to future visits to the Garden Apartment.

Spring 2008; Port-Vendres with 2 young children

Marc & Ellen The Netherlands
Review Submitted: January 26, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2008
We stayed in the garden apartment late April 2007 with our 2 kids (2 and 4) and we had a great time. The apartment is very central, close to shops and restaurants (walkable within a few minutes), a couple of nice beaches (few minutes by car), lovely Collioure, and let's not forget to mention: the P-V fish market!
6 of the 7 days we had sunshine and temperatures to have lunch and dinner outside, the kids enjoyed exploring the garden, watching a DVD before sleeping and of course the close-by "attractions" I mentioned above. Very helpful were Karla's recommendations we found in the apartment for day trips!

Wonderful days in Port Vendres

Marco_berlin Berlin/Germany
Review Submitted: January 23, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2008
Dear Karla
We all enjoyed the pleasant stay in your lovely Garden Apartment. Most of the time we where outside that means on the beach (most times the smaller one in Paulilles) or on a trip in the region (St. Martin, Perpignan, vineyards around, Peyrepertuse, Gorges de la Fou and so on but the rest of the time we loved to sit on the wooden terrace and had a good time there with comfortable temperatures (only the last two evenings of our stay were to cold for eating outside in the evening).

We love the expanding view over the harbour, the hills around Port Vendres and the Pyrenees.

The highlight of our holidays was the menu and wine tasting in Clos de Paulilles what we can recommend with a lot enthusiasm.
