3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom, sleeps 6

The Garden Apartment is a comfortable, well equipped home for our guests, situated in the historic old town with great views around the harbour, the Mediterranean and mountains and one of the largest gardens in the area. It is on the top floor of a traditional French 'bourgeois' house and retains many original features. The kitchen, dining and lounge area is large and opens onto a timber-decked terrace with teak furniture, leading to the gardens. The kitchen is large, fully equipped, including a breakfast bar, with views to the harbour & mountains. The dining area is adjacent to the traditional Catalan fireplace, with views across the old town to the mountains. The lounge is large, airy & cool in summer. The bedrooms provide a lot of flexibility: 1 triple, 1 double and 1 single bedroom. Velux windows give good ventilation in the summer. Private terraced gardens to the side have fruit trees (plums, figs, apricots), flowers, lawns, - good for relaxing, outdoor dining & admiring views!

Port Vendres, adjacent to Collioure, is a natural deep water harbour 1st used by the Greeks in 8BC, & remains a major import point for fruit: you will see freighters from around the world in the harbour. If you like seafood you have arrived in heaven because Port Vendres has a large fishing fleet. The famous fish market has a great degustation bar with every type of shellfish, including oysters and white wine. Restaurants in Port Vendres are wonderful. A stroll along the quay will take you past fishing boats, usually a freighter, often a cruise ship, the ferry, and the yacht harbour. There are excellent beaches close by & down the coast you pass Pauliles with its superb beach, Banyuls, and into Spain to enjoy the Costa Brava. Cadaques has the home of Salvador Dali. Here the Pyrenees reach down to the sea, the walking is good, either through vine covered hillsides or in the high mountains. Local wines are excellent as are 240 sunny days/yr.see: http:// www.Port-Vendres.com/webcam.php

Additional information about rental rates

  • PLEASE NOTE: payment available in pounds sterling, euros or dollars. Outside of high season more flexibility on dates. Weekly rental available in high season. Friendly, reliable, French speaking housekeeper who understands English available for shopping, chauffering, babysitting etc -

We accept 2 week rentals during the summer season but there is some flexibility for one week rentals if current bookings have created a one week interval, so PLEASE ASK US!!

Finally, we have not increased our renal prices in 8 consecutive years but have had to raise cost of cleaning and linen rentals (professionally cleaned) inline with costs incurred.
  • There are a great many different beaches to chose from. The closest one is 6 mins walk - and you can take a route which avoids main roads so suitable for small children. From Port Vendres, along the route to neighbouring Collioure there are several beaches, called Criques - which are less busy then the Collioure beaches, especially during high season. Here you can snorkel, and there are also diving rocks. Some are more pebbly, others have sand and rock. Obviously lots of good fishing around the Port and beaches!. On the opposite side of the Port, going outwards the lighthouse are 3 more beaches. Here you will find Le Poisson Rouge - excellent restaurant with views out to sea. There is a local bus that runs up and down the coast - from Perpignan to the Spanish border - it costs 1 Euro if you go one stop or ten! Hop on a bus and visit the wonderful sheltered beaches of Les Pauliles and beyond. We provide extensive information in your rental pack on best beaches, restaurants, wine etc
  • Payment can be made in pounds sterling, euros or dollars. There is a booking/damage deposit which is refundable once our housekeeper, Evelyne, has confirmed that you have left the Garden Apartment in good order. If you have any special needs or areas of special interests, we will endeavour to assist you or provide you with any additional information that you might need.

Our elderly neighbours regularly visit us, taking the steps in their stride. Port Vendres & Collioure are a maze of steps and stairs which partly accounts for the robust good health of the citizens of these lively seaside towns. Extra care must be taken with young children aged up to about 7 years however half of our tenants are families with young children who adore the boats in the harbour, picking fruit in our large private garden and chasing the little salamanders. The steps are steep which makes push chair access difficult. The Catalan garden has lawns on some terraces, fruit trees (cherry, fig, plum, apricot, mulberry, pear, apple, grapes, lemons, olives), bushes, flowers, rock garden. Small Footprint on the Planet? : Don't want to fly? Take a train! For approx £110 roundtrip you can pick up a train in London at about 8:15am, change once at Lille at lunchtime, and arrive in Perpignan by about 7pm. Then you take a final 20 minute train trip down the coast from Perpignan to Port Vendres. While in Port Vendres you can take the local buses up and down the coast. Alternatively you can take your car on one of the ferries and drive down. My brother does the Callais to Port Vendres trip in 11 1/2 hrs, or if he takes overnight ferry from Portsmouth to St Malo its 8-9 hrs. I tend to take a leisurely 2-3 days, enjoying the scenery on the backroads. JUNE 2008 REVIEW :'Just wanted to let you know we had a fantastic holiday in Port Vendres and we all loved your house. My elder son, Alex (aged 4) loved all the bits and pieces in the house and the boats in the harbour. Thanks also for all the info on the local area. It was great to have some insider knowledge.' Guest Book from June 2007: See www.collioure.blogspot.com. (1) Charles O. from Norfolk: 'We thoroughly enjoyed our holiday. Although we like being near the sea, we're not particularly after beaches so your lovely garden was an absolute bonus. We spent two or three days just enjoying the sun, the shade and the view without going out at all. We were delighted with Port Vendres and very pleased we were there rather than the neighboring costal villages. PV has the right scale and is a busy working community that we found appealing. Evelyne (housekeeper) certainly is a treasure and full of information. She was very tolerant of our version of French and it was good to talk at some length. Evelyne, the wine and flowers that we found on arrival, and your written information all made us feel most welcome.' (June 2007).

(2) Eleanor H, from Germany, June 2007:'We had a wonderful time in Port Vendres, we found it had a very real air about it. The apartment was great. There was everything we needed. Fabulous!'(June 2007)

GUEST QUOTES: Judith Squires & family, August 2006: 'Just a note to let you know that we had a wonderful time at the apartment - we really didn't want to leave and we all want a return visit! We didn't even take the car anywhere for the first 4 days - just explored the local bays and beaches during the day and pottered around watering the garden in the evenings, cooking fabulous fresh fish on the barbeque and sipping great wines - bliss! The local people were all very friendly and helpful and the boys felt confident enough to go out by themselves and practice their French. The apartment is fabulously well equipped and you've obviously put a lot of thought into it. It really felt like being a welcome guest in someone's home. In short it was a fabulous holiday and can't fault it at all! Can't wait for the next visit.'

Nice little spot above Port Vendres

Review Submitted: December 5, 2011 Date of Stay: September 2011
The Garden Apartment is a beautiful spot and we did enjoy our stay very much. The apartment is very well appointed, only the water pressure of the shower needs getting used to it. We loved the garden and the evenings sitting on the beautiful terrace. The house keeper, Evelyne, is very attentive and offers many helpful insider information. The apartment is well maintained.
Karla, the owner, is also very cooperative and provides very good customer service!
The location of the apartment is perfect: it is a quiet spot but only a few steps and you find yourself in the middle of the village. The surroundings are beautiful: blue sea, nice little beaches and the mountains just before the doorstep. For us one of the most beautiful places in France !
We would definitely recommend the apartment and will surely come back !

Garden Apartment Porte Vendres - a holiday haven

Review Submitted: July 19, 2011 Date of Stay: June 2011
As soon as we walked into Karla's Garden Apartment, we knew we had chosen the perfect place for our family holiday in the south of France. Nestled above the port, we had an ideal location to enjoy Porte Vendres - to skip down for coffee in the morning, walk to a local cove to swim or to enjoy a leisurely dinner or glass of wine in the evenings. The house itself was so comfortable with a lovely calm atmosphere and well equipped with everything we needed - including a wonderful book collection which catered for all tastes - and our teenage children made use of the dvd library as well. The garden for me was a lovely retreat - in the mornings to read or for an evening barbecue - sitting among flowers and budding fruit in the sunshine. Porte Vendres itself has good shopping facilities and proved a great base for travelling. Locally we enjoyed the many beaches Karla had recommended and strolled through the neighbouring village of Collioure. Moving further afield, we made our way high into the mountains to visit Cathar castles and experience some of the history of the region. A visit to the birthplace of Moliere in Pezenas and also to Carcassonne made wonderful day trips as well. I would whole heartedly recommend the Garden Apartment, its location, its facilities and the attention to detail in all our dealings with Karla. And we were delighted to meet Evelyne who was very helpful and very patient with our school French! Our only regret is that we did not have more time but it only makes us more determined to return to Porte Vendres and to the Garden Apartment in the future.

What a beautiful spot!

Review Submitted: May 13, 2011 Date of Stay: April 2011
We loved Port Vendres. It is a beautiful and romantic area with ocean and mountains, palm trees, hikes, museums, terraced landscapes and great food. It has both a Spanish and French feel which is perhaps the Catalan influence.

The apartment is just up from the port--high enough that we were away from the busyness but able to see a sliver of the port, the mountains and all the orange rooftops. The air is so clean and fresh, we slept great and woke relaxed every day.

The apartment is very comfortable and clean. They have two outside sitting areas and a grill. I checked 55 + and small children but I would say if you don't like stairs it will not be for you. There are stairs getting up to the apt and a spiral stair going up to the bedrooms. The kitchen is beautifully equipped for cooking, the living area is open, comfortable and spacious and there is a TV and dvd player. There is a clothes washer and you can hang laundry on the line to dry in the sun.

It was cool for swimming but there are several beaches. We walked to Collyer one day which was an easy walk. It is a larger town and has lots of restaurants and shops. There is also a train station in town which makes it easy to get just about anywhere, so if you don't have a car you can still be pretty mobile. We even went to Barcelona from Port-Vendres.

We felt imbedded in the little town and would love to go back for a longer stay some time. It feels like a real place and you are in a real neighborhood. There is a fabulous patisserie, go down the stairs to the harbor and then to the left, that makes fabulous croissants and apple turnovers, yummmm...every morning is all I can say!

Great Time in Port Vendres at the Garden Flat!

Review Submitted: October 10, 2010 Date of Stay: July 2010
It took me a bit of time to write my review, too many things to do, but my memories of my last holiday at the garden apartment are still vivid and alive!

We had a great time!

I went there with my wife and three teenagers; everyone loved the house, lots of space, clean, colourful, comfortable, peaceful, practical, cosy, nice views to the sea and the mountain.

All our days started with a nice French breakfast in the kitchen or the garden. Every morning I went to the marina with my daughter to get some delicious baguettes and pain au cholocat ( Boulangerie La Paline, 50 meters on the right once you go down town by the stairs, 2 min from home) and of course my sport daily newspaper. There were some beautiful yacht to watch, and sometimes we could even get to view some fisherman unloading the fishes.

I am still missing the bread, the sun and the apartment, it was so nice.

Pretty much all our afternoon we went to the beach, almost a new one every day. There is a huge variety of beaches over there, sand, rocks, you have it all!
We loved the town of Collioure, a bit like St Tropez but without the fuss.

The evening were fantastic, they have great restaurant at Port Vendres. One of our favourite was Le café de France, the Tapas were amazing. Our waiter at the café de France was Jean Christophe, a great guy who will give you good recommendation for local and tasty food. The owner of the garden apartment is very well organised and give you a list with her own selection of many things to do, to eat and visit. Her recommendations are really good, experience counts there!

We sometimes had nice evening watching a DVD with the kids. We took a few from those available there, the kids loved it.

Well there is too much to say really. The place is great for a holiday, the sun is always around, and the view from the flat of the vineyard down the hills is amazing; the apartment was like our home, the owner Karla is a very kind lady making sure you spend a great time there. You should have a go and you will never regret it!
