The Languedoc-Roussillon region, on France’s southernmost Mediterranean coast, is
renowned for dramatic landscapes: mountains, gorges, and broad, white sand
beaches. The area is very popular with walkers, and is full of interesting hiking trails
of various levels of difficulty. The charming fishing port of Collioure is located at the
point where the Pyrenees mountains meet the sea, just 20 kilometers north of the
Spanish border. Collioure’s pastel-colored houses, royal castle, ancient church and
lovely azure bay have attracted artists for centuries, including Mattisse, Derain and
Picasso.
