The flat is the top floor of an old village house perched on a hillside overlooking the port of Port-Vendres and the foothills of the Pyrenees. If you walk over the hill you have an uninterrupted view across the Mediterranean. The town centre and the harbour are five minutes away on foot. The immediate environment is very calm and you have access to a terraced garden in the shade of a large fig tree to the rear of the house. The flat itself comprises a good sized living room with a balcony overlooking the port, a galley kitchen, a bathroom with shower and a (small) double bedroom - also with a lovely view. It was re-decorated in 2005. It is ideal for a couple, although it is possible for a third person to sleep on the convertible settee in the living room. Access to the house is up a series of steps and along a path : car parking is on the square below. Port-Vendres is on the Perpignan-Barcelona railway line so a car is not a necessity.

Port-Vendres is on the Mediterranean coast south of the Pyrenees. It is 2 km from Collioure -'village of the Impressionists' and about 15km from the Spanish border. It is an active fishing port so the village remains lively even in the winter months - there is even a cinema. The scenery is beautiful and there are superb walks along the coast or up into the Pyrenees. With a car there is a lot to explore - from Cathar castles in France to 'Dali country' in Spain. The nearest airports - both with Ryanair flights from the UK- are Perpignan in France (about 25 miles) and Gerona in Spain (about 40 miles). Barcelona is a 2 hour drive down the motorway.

Notes: The flat is a perfect 'retreat' because it is up above the village and yet close to the centre. From the balcony you can watch boats coming in and out of the harbour, and see Port-Vendres going about its daily business, without hearing any noise. There are superb walks on the cliffs along the sea-front. Access to the flat is only on foot, and is up steps so is not for anyone who has trouble walking.

Thank you for providing the facilities for such an enjoyable week in Port-Vendres. We have nothing but praise for the apartment. Great position, wonderful view, excellent facilities. ..... It would be worth recommending to our successors that the fish market is out of this world and that the local amenities are more than satisfactory for all tastes. We will certainly be returning.'

Anyone who likes beautiful countryside with sea views and mountains will like Port-Vendres all year round. Even in winter there are sunny days and blue skies, and May and June are gorgeous : the hillsides are still green , the days are warm, the evenings are long (remember that France is an hour different from the UK so we have an extra hour of daylight) and -above all- there are no crowds.

This property has a wonderful view over the port and harbour and the accommodation is perfectly adequate if there are not more than two of you. BUT there are 108 steps up to the property and this makes you think twice every time you want to "nip" to the boulangerie etc. Otherwise its very good value for money and - oh yes, it helps if you like cats. We don't much but it didn't put us off!
Owner's Response: Very glad that my visitors enjoyed their stay.
The apartment is best for two people - we tend to discourage groups of 3 even if the latter is a child.
There is no way to avoid the steps ! They are the price to pay for the gorgeous view and peaceful location.
The colony of local cats - all well tended by various neighbours - tends to act as a welcome committee. Best not to invite them in, and they usually get the message if you are not a cat lover !
