We highly recommend visiting the magnificent aquarium of the laboratory of Arago de Banyuls sur mer.
The beaches at Port-Vendres are the coves of Oli and d'en Baux at a 5 min walking distance from the house. The beach and the bay of Paulilles are 1.8 miles away from downtown towards Spain. You will find a car park,pedals boats,windsurf, a bar and a restaurant (' Le Sole Mio') open each day in July and August.
The sea reserve and the diving::
'LA RESERVE' is the first and the unique natural sea reserve in France. Off Port-Vendres, between Banyuls and Cerbère, this reserve covers over 1606 acres of sea along 3.5 miles of coast. Beyond its scientific interest, its aims to make the users of the sea to contribute to the protection and the restocking of the natural local heritage.
'LE SENTIER SOUS-MARIN' has been put up at the beginning of the beach of Peyrefite, within a downwind bay. The visit is made by snorkeling with flippers
on the surface alongside an unmarked path in only a few inches of water. It is ideal for children who want to explore and discover the underwater beauty.
The depths of the sea near the Côte Vermeille are teeming with a lot of treasures. Three wrecks are located off the Cap Béar. They are accessible to the experienced divers. In addition, the Natural Sea Reserve of Banyuls-Cerbère is a true paradise for the divers with a myriad of rare species.
Hiking:
Due to the diversity of the landscapes, the Côte Vermeille is an ideal place for a family hiking alongside the sea as well as for an expert rambler. You will find a lot of paths very well described in the 'Topo Guide' of the Côte Vermeille distributed by the Tourist Information Office of Port-Vendres. You can discover all the paths and tracks undulating around the vineyards and the scrubland, the old farmhouses, the signal towers (Fort St Elme, Ermitage de Consolation, Tour Madeloc, Phare Béar) the Roman Churches, and the panoramic views of the sea, Spain and the many natural cirques which compose this land. La Côte Vermeille is the last district before Spain with wine producing tradition. The vineyards create a unique landscape scattered with dry low walls and small cabins in the vineyards called 'casots'. You will be captivated by the exceptional mildness of its weather, its colors, light and beauty that inspired the greatest artists such as Picasso, Matisse, Derain, Dufy, Chagall...
Golf:
Between the Pyrénnées and the Mediterranee, it is one of the most renowned within golfers of any level... open in 1976 and totally renovated in 2005, 'Le domaine du golf de St Cyprien' is a round of course open to everyone; you will enjoy 27 holes admiring the wonderful landscapes built alongside a lake at the foot of the Canigou mountain. The very technical round of course called 'La forêt' will allow you to discover a magnificent pine-wood.
You can enjoy 2 golf courses, the 'Canigou-Etang' (18 holes-par 73-7086.5 yards) and the 'Saint-Cyprien' (9 holes-par 35-2979 yards) strewn with many water hazards ideal for all levels.
The golf of Saint-Cyprien costs : 38 euros for 18 holes and 25 euros for 9 holes.Half sets of the club and trolleys/carts can be hired. It is less than 30 minutes from Port-Vendres.
