Collioure, France: A charming and enchanting port village, Collioure is the gem of Roussillon. It is nestled in an idyllic site on the Mediterranean, north of the Pyrennes and south of pristine Languedoc coastline. It has been a magnet for artists since Matisse settle here in 1905. Narrow cobbled streets, now crowded with galleries, restaurants and boutiques, lead back from its much-painted harbour, framed by the small Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Anges and by The Chateau Royal.

Further details for this holiday house rental in Collioure, France

Collioure: A charming and enchanting port village, Collioure is the gem of Roussillon. It is nestled in an idyllic site on the Mediterranean, north of the Pyrennes and south of pristine Languedoc coastline. It has been a magnet for artists since Matisse settle here in 1905. Narrow cobbled streets, now crowded with galleries, restaurants and boutiques, lead back from its much-painted harbour, framed on one end by the small Eglise Notre-Dame-des-Anges and at the other by The Chateau Royal, an imposing castle built on a former Roman site. Anchovies are the specialty of Collioure, preserved in a traditional method for generations, and featured prominently in many local restaurants. There is also a wonderful local market on Wednesday and Sunday mornings; and wineries abound in the area.

North to Perpignan: Perpignan, formerly the capital of French Catalonia, always seems buzzing with activity, is the largest city in the area with a population of about 160,000. Its many shops, sites and fine restaurants are patronised as enthusiastically by its well-heeled citizens as by visitors. A lively commercial city, its airport is served by RyanAir via the UK. Nearby Canet-Plage is a long, established seaside resort, with a casino and a long seafront lined with bars, restaurants, shops and apartments. St. Cyprien sports a 3km sandy beach, harbour and marina, Aqualand and an international standard golf course. Argeles-Sur-Mer is an old Catalan village which is animated all year round with its colourful markets and games of petanque (bowls) under the plane trees, as well as the dancing of the Sardane on Mondays during the summer.

South to the Border; Barcelona: Collioure is located about 2 hours north of Barcelona taking the motorway, or about 3.5 hours along the coastal route. Barcelona is served by most international airlines, including some of the UK 'cut-price' airlines. Port-Vendres, about 5 miles south along the coast from Collioure, is home to many fishing boats and has a well-equipped marina. Banyuls-sur-Mer, with its pale pink and white buildings and shady squares feels distinctly Catalan, and is the home of the sweet, dark brown aperitif, Banyuls, first made there by the Knights of Templar in the 13th century. Cerbere, a quaint border town, huddles around a small pebbly bay. A village not to miss is Ceret, known throughout France for the delicious plump cherries which grown in the local orchards. There are also a number of fine restaurants in Ceret and a Museum of Modern Art. Nearby Le Boulou and Amelie-les-Bains are spa resort towns nearby. Hiking and biking treks throughout the area & skiing in winter.

Golf: Golf in the Area: There is a 27-hole golf course in St. Cyprien, which is about 15 minutes by car. It costs 31 Euro for 18 holes or 18 Euro for 9 holes; a half-set of clubs (6) costs 7 Euro. They also offer week-end and weekly rates. This is the closest to us; there are about half a dozen courses around Girona, Spain which is about one hour south on the motorway.

Other Activities: skiing

Chez Collioure - worth the trip

The Diary Lindfield, West Sussex, England
Review Submitted: September 28, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
A great place to site ourselves in the lovely Catalan town of Collioure. Having stayed in variable accomodation in France over the last few years, we found Chez Collioure ideal for our family of two adults and two young children. Extremely spacious and in a quiet location (important with young children) about 10 minutes walk or a 4 minutes cycle ride from the main attractions and centre of town. The house caters for the holiday reader, the lover of foreign language films and the jazz ebnthusiast with an extensive range of books, videos and CD's. Thoughtfully, there are plenty of guidebooks and maps of Catalonia and the Lanquedoc region. There is plenty to see and do with good links down to Barcelona and into the Pyrenees and plenty of vartiety in the scenery. If we were to be ultra-picky, a number of lightbulbs were missing or not working when we arrived - but this would not detract from us recommending this property to anyone wanting a base to explore this pretty seaside town and the fascinating area.

August in Collioure

The T Families Nottingham
Review Submitted: August 21, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Our party of two families has just spent two glorious weeks in this comfortable house in the beautiful resort of Collioure. We feel that the photographs do not do justice to this spacious, homely and well equipped holiday home which we would highly recommend. The owners have provided lots of information about the area and the house is full of useful guide books about the area. Collioure is an ideal location for exploring the whole Catalan region and is abeautiful holiday place in itself. .We would recommend Restaurant St Elne which is good value for Collioure, serves good value wine, good sized portions, employs very accomodating staff and is in a beautiful sea front location. Our only criticism of Collioure is that it did not have a fish mongers which we would have liked. And our only critism of the house is that we did feel that the walk to the beach was more in the region of 15-20 minutes with children, in the heat and coming up the hill after a hard day laying on the beach!

Perfect holiday

Brano Skerries, Co Dublin, Ireland
Review Submitted: August 17, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
19th July - 1st August
We have just spent 2 wonderful weeks in this charming house. The house is spacious & very comfortable. The kitchen is very well equipped & the secluded garden is great for dining. The views are amazing & the location is perfect for those seeking a relaxing break. A 10 minute walk to the beach & centre of Collioure.
Our 3 teenagers loved every minute of their stay & we are already looking forward to our return next year.
Tips for teenagers: Indigo night club - "unbelievably good" !!
Internet access in centre of Collioure. Aqualand. Decathalon sport store - outskirts of Perpignan. Tourist office very helpful.

Une maison très fraîche effectivement!

Review Submitted: July 24, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Great property, great location. Whilst in a cul-de-sac with several other properties in the vicinity, the actual property itself is extremely private providing excellent alfresco dining in the backgarden. Beautiful vista of the surrounding area from the front balcony. No need for car to enjoy Collioure itself. Short walk to the beach/town. Feels longer though in the heat! Great for couples/families etc. House itself is different to the norm, which is a plus and one warms to it very quickly as it has a great homely feel, which sometimes lacks in other properties. Highly recommended.

Easter

Review Submitted: April 21, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
We have just returned from beautiful Collioure. We had a wonderful time staying at Chez Collioure which more than lived up to its description (not often in the case of rental properties in France!) Unfortunately, the weather was not too good. The house, however, offered a cosy warmth to relax and enjoy some of the many books in the library and just relax. We especially enjoyed sampling the local wines and the world-famous anchovies! We highly recommend this accommodation. It is ideal for a large family such as ourselves, 7 people - or even for two couples and a couple kids! We hope to return again next year!
