Beaches:
Along the Mediterranean coast from Le Barcares to Banyuls are some lovely sandy beaches.
The nearest beach of Torreilles (about 7 minutes by car) is very unspoilt with a couple of bars/shops leading up to the beach and a couple of seasonal beach bars.
Le Bacares, Saint Marie, Canet, St Cyprian and Argeles are tourist beach resorts with more shops, bars and restaurants. Canet is a lovely family beach.
There are also two local water parks – one at Port Leucate and one between Saint Cyprian and Argeles. It would be advisable to check with the Tourist Information for current opening times.
Places To Visit:
Perpignan is a lovely French town with a canal running through the centre, which is very well maintained with flowerbeds on either side of it. As well as the usual shops, there are some unusual boutiques and Galleries Lafayette is the towns flag ship department store. There are also plenty of roadside bars and cafes to sit and watch the world go by!
Away from the Coast, towards the Pyrenees are some lovely French villages and plenty of vineyards. The “Route du Rousillon” is well worth following to sample some very fruity wines. There are plenty of Abbeys, Forts, Caves and villages to explore. The village of Villefranche is very quaint, surrounded by a Fort wall and with Fort Liberation up on the mountain to visit if you are brave enough to climb the 300 steps! (A minibus is also available!) From Villefranche you can catch the “Petit Train Jaune” (The little yellow train), which takes you on a journey through the mountains.
The lovely old walled City of Carcassonne is just over an hours drives away.
The African Reserve at Sigean is worth a visit with over 3,800 animals to see.
Andorra is approximately 2 ½ hours by car.
Barcelona is 2 hours by car along the Autoroute (This is a toll road). Although busy, it is well worth a visit to this Spanish City and to wander through the “Rambles”.
The Spanish Costa Blanca is less than an hours drive by car if you want a change of beach scenery! Roses is in a little cove with a nice beach, plenty of restaurants & little side streets.
There are several riding schools in the area if you would like to go for a horse ride across the dunes.
There are 2 go-Karting Circuits and a small Jet-Ski course in the area.
In the winter, the nearest ski resort is about 1 ½ hours drive away – snow chains will be required for all cars – along a very picturesque, windy, mountainous road. Follow the N116 towards Andorra. In the summer this same area is very picturesque.
