Old stone farmhouse, rural retreat, 2 charming self-contained gîtes
Mas des Figues, an ancient stone farmhouse, is situated in a quiet hamlet just outside the village of St. Christol-les-Alès. Lovingly restored and extended over the years, it is set among pastureland and vineyards at the foot of the Cevennes mountains. The property comprises the owners' home in converted cellars with two independent and self-contained gites on the upper level. The attractive upper garden is shaded by mature trees - a large oak and old fig trees. Both Gites have terraces with garden furniture and barbecues for 'al fresco' dining. The property features an outdoor swimming pool on the lower level adjoining a garden also shaded by mature trees. The traditional stone buildings have been renovated to provide a comfortable and tranquil base in which to relax or from which to explore and relish the many delights of the region. You’ll receive a warm welcome from the English owners, Sue and Andrew, who will do everything possible to make your stay relaxing and enjoyable.

Things to do and see
Unlike larger towns and coastal resorts of southern France, Alès has retained its character and charm. There’s a daily covered market, and on Mondays, an open air market spills out into the surrounding streets. There are free music shows every evening in summer months and many festivals throughout the year. In early May the local Feria turns Alès into a 4-day party, with bull-fighting in the local Arena and parades and dancing in the streets. The ever popular provencal market in Uzes on a Saturday morning is a must with its pretty squares filled with artisanal stalls. Uzès and Vézenobres are just two of many medieval towns and villages in the Cevennes foothills. Stretching from the mountains and forests of the Cevennes to the salt marshes of the Camargue, the Gard offers a huge variety of attractions. Nîmes boasts the only fully preserved Roman temple of the ancient world, the Maison Carrée, and the city centre also features a number of interesting museums and many good shops.
The famous Roman amphitheatre, Les Arènes, is host to excellent live concerts in the summer months but advance booking is essential. The Pont de Gard, just northeast of Nîmes, is the largest surviving Roman aqueduct, while Aigues Mortes to the south is an almost perfectly preserved walled medieval town. For lovers of the great outdoors there are endless opportunities for cycling, hiking, pony trekking, fishing and canoeing. The nearest golf courses are Nimes Vaccaroles, a good 18 hole course and Uzes, a pretty 9 hole course. For fun, there is a 6 hole (par 19) riverside course just 10 minutes away at Ribaute-les-Tavernes. There are miles of sandy beaches on the Mediterranean coast and countless vineyards to explore and enjoy. For the less energetic, there are many scenic drives in the magnificent Cevennes - to Mont Aigoual, the Cirque de Navacelles and the Gorges du Tarn. With superb light and beautiful views, the area offers great opportunities for those who love to paint.

A perfect holiday. We enjoyed every minute and wished we could stay longer than 2 weeks. The Piggennier was perfect. Quiet, beautiful and thoughtfully fitted out for a family. We'll never forget the the warm welcome we recieved and it was lovely to have Sue & Andrew on hand for advice and great chats, within 5 minutes of arriving we had relaxed. They are brilliant hosts. The garden is large and there is plenty of space for children to play, the pool is gorgeous and surrounded by fragrant lavender, it over looks surrounding farms and olive trees. The whole place is peaceful and quiet. There are lovely places to visit both locally and further afield. We really loved the Bambooserie and also visited Avignon which is well worth it. The food in the area is superb, there is a fabulous restaurant just at the top of the hill and the local working town has everything you need, glorious bread, great butcher, excellent green grocer. There are markets in surrounding villages with all the culinary delights you need when on holiday in France. We ate so well, that there was a lot more of us by the end of the holiday. Lovely long evenings on the patio, sipping the great rose from a neighbouring farm that was cheap and delicious, nibbling on yet more cheese and pate....what more could you ask for? Thank you for a wonderful holiday. Darren, Nicky, Lochlan & Jonah
