Uzes, an unspoilt medieval town in the Gard region of the Languedoc-Rousillon less than an hour from the famous Camargue region and the adjacent coastline of sandy beaches. Uzès has the distinction of being the 1st Duché of France, its castle and the title having been in the same family since the 12th century. Though the history of the small town goes back a long time before the Romans, the towers and the arcade we see today are mostly of medieval origin. The town is characterised by lime-stone buildings, many dating from the 12th century and which have been carefully restored in recent years. The pedestrianised town centre is circled by a one way “boulevard”. The town is well supplied with interesting family-run shops and restaurants. There is a cinema, large open air swimming pool, tennis courts, etc. The lively market on Saturdays takes over the whole town and is one of the best in France.
