Mas des Grailles, our home in France, the perfect holiday hideaway, is a 200 year old home in the heart of the magnificent Cevennes National Park. Access by locked private drive; magnificent views over the valley. Extensive natural grounds, fruit trees, willow, oak, mimosa, chestnut, indigenous pine. Two large terraces (1 covered) with tables & chairs allowing meals to be taken outside. Fully equipped kitchen/dining area, archway to sitting room with both antique leather & modern comfortable sofas & log-burner. Upstairs, 2 bedrooms, shower room, loo. On the independent lower ground floor (outside steps) is a twin bed (+1 folding) ensuite room, tea & coffee making facilities & own garden furniture. Walking & biking from the door. Buzzard, deer, red squirrel and wild boar visit regularly. Superb clear river swimming, golf. Avignon, Uzes, Nimes, Montpellier, Orange, Arles, Camarague all easily accessible. Wonderful local markets, museums. Only 1.5 hr from Le Grau du Roi on the Med.

A typical Cevenol mas in a truly unspoilt area in the centre of the South of France, renowned by Robert Louis Stevenson's 'Travels with a Donkey'. The hills of the Cevennes National Park are far enough from the frenzy of the Mediterranean coast yet only just over an hour away. Steeped in history, Portes is North West of Nimes nestling in the foothills of the Cevennes between the town of Ales to the south and the villages of Chamborigaud and Genolhac to the north. The stunning Chateau de Portes dates back to the Middle Ages. Magnificent views. The nearest town is Ales (15 minutes) with all the modern facilities associated with a busy town. Shops in Portes are within walking distance: there is a bar/tabac, bakery & newly-refurbished hotel-restaurant. Three good restaurants within a 10 minute drive. Supermarkets can be found in Chamborigaud or La Grand'Combe 10 minutes away. Museums, mines, caves, rivers and lakes, golf, horse & donkey rides, tennis, swimming are all close by.

    Rental is from Saturday to Saturday although there is flexibility off-season. Long lets at a preferential rate off season. Security deposit Euro 150/GB £100 refunded within 14 days of departure if no damage - less telephone charges. Final cleaning charge of Euro 60/£40. firewood in winter, as well as electric blankets for the cooler months. Linen & house towels included. £25 supplement from October onwards for heating.
  • One well-behaved dog very welcome.

Notes: Set below the Chateau in its own private grounds of 1.5 acres. TV, CD/Cd's, DVD, Sky, films, good selection of books, jigsaws & games, boules, soft toys. Baby bath, etc. French windows lead to balcony with table, 6 chairs, parasol, swing, 2 sunloungers, deep cushions. Both balconies have a table and chairs. Bedroom 1 has kingsize bed, good reading lights, large cupboards with solid chestnut doors, big window, fantastic view; bedroom 2 three single beds + 1 tuck-away bed, big cupboard, dressing table, chairs. Shower room & basin; sep. WC. The third bedroom, which is accessed by outside steps, is on the lower ground floor and has twin beds, 1 folding bed, ensuite shower room & loo, CD player. Electric heating throughout. In the winter there are electric blankets for the beds and a wood-burning stove for which logs are supplied. All linen provided apart from towels for swimming.

Travel:: Ryanair offer flights to Nimes Airport (1 hour's drive away from the house) from Luton, Liverpool. Montpellier airport is just a further 30 minutes away. Jet2.com flights from Leeds Bradford and Edinburgh to Avignon.

Golf: More and more golf courses are springing up in the area and you would have a good choice or 3 or 4 within 30 minutes drive. The nearest is the Golf d'Ales Ribaute which is only 10 minutes from Anduze. To the north there is Golf de La Garde-Guerin at Villefort. Further details available at the house.

Other Activities: Clear river swimming, gliding, canoeing, donkey treks...

1.'Many many thanks for a wonderful time in your Mas. We all enjoyed the peace and tranquillity & the abundant space to each do our own thing! The area is stunning & we had some great days out driving off the beaten track. I was very reluctant to leave. Thank you too for the bottle of wine. Really very kind of you.'

We often talked about that,and your obvious generosity and trust, I hope it made us even more careful about the way we treated the fabric, furnishings & facilities. We saw a family of 5 sanglier piglets who seem to come every day..the house was spotless when we arrived..We loved our week and felt privileged that you allowed us to share your precious Cevennol home. Thank you very much.'

Un excellent séjour au Mas des Grailles

Nous avons passé deux semaines des plus reposantes dans ce beau mas situé en pleine campagne. La bâtisse a été rénovée avec soin et offre deux superbes terrasses bénéficiant chacune d'une magnifique vue et d'un ensoleillement alterné (matin sur l'une, soir sur l'autre). La cuisine est superbement aménagée et très bien équipée tandis que les chambres sont confortables.

L'accueil fut discret et chaleureux y compris pour nos deux lévriers whippets qui ont un peu transformé le jardin étagé en champ de course !

En bordure du parc national des Cévennes et à deux pas du château historique de Portes, ce mas offre la possibilité tout à la fois de belles promenades et excursions que ce soit vers les montagnes du Nord ou les villes (Alès, Anduze, Uzès, Nîmes...) au Sud.

Bref, un séjour à recommander !
