The medieval village of Durfort is on the southern slope of the Cévennes Mountains. The region is extremely beautiful and culturally rich. The mountains are full of well marked hiking, biking and riding trails and scenic roads like La Corniche des Cévennes. Vineyards, gardens and olive groves dot the landscape. Nearby villages like Sommières and Uzès have open air markets offering superb local produce, wines, cheeses and crafts. Rivers like the Herault, Gardon and Vis afford ample opportunities for swimming, fishing, canoeing and kayaking. Other local attractions include Roman ruins like Le Pont du Gard and natural wonders like Le Cirque de Navacelles and La Petite Camargue. The village itself is utterly peaceful and serene. Nearly every house is stone and every street narrow. Rose and wisteria vines adorn the facades. Local amenities include a general store, library, bakery, art gallery and three excellent restaurants. A supermarket and other stores are just 10 minutes by car.
