Lovely house in beautiul area

MaartenS Amsterdam
Review Submitted: August 23, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
We had an amazing week in this lovely house named La Briasse. The view is magnificent, the pool has a perfect temperature and the house is really very cosy. The bedrooms and bathroom (toilet, bath and a separate shower) are spacious and fine. It is very private and quiet; just what we wanted. Everything you need for bbq-ing, cooking, washing or relaxing is there and works. The nearby village Ayen is pittoreseque and has the basics (bakery, bucher, little supermaket). Objat, a 12 minute drive away, has the big supermarche's and provides everything you might need. The weather was lovely, sometimes in the morning cloudy, but in the afternoons the sun always came out. The area is rural but has very nice small towns with old churches and castles. The Limousin is famous for it's cows (delicous meat), truffles and geese (fois gras). There are numerous markets where you can buy these specialities.
We didn't go out to eat because we really liked to stay at the house while bbq-ing, swimming and enjoying the view. Definitely a place to visit again!
Owner's Response: I know how important a holiday is and try my hardest to make everything 'perfect' so it's wonderful to hear that someone enjoyed my home/their holiday - thank you!

Peaceful retreat.

Review Submitted: July 12, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
A lovely setting with views over the valley from the house and the pool area.
Great Pool,Private(not over looked) and for own use, good size and lovely and warm(heated).
House comfortable and homely with everything you could possibly need.
A comfortable stroll(just under a mile ,20 minutes) along a quiet country lane(no street lights) into the small village of Ayen which has baker, butcher, two general stores,a couple of Bars and restaurants.
As mentioned before the Thursday night farmers market/BBQ is a fun evening when the whole village comes out to eat and drink.Only in July and August i think ?

Thanks Dawn.

Plenty of sight seeing available within the area and further a field.
Owner's Response: Thank you!

You didn't mention that Rachel is such a good French folk dancer.............

Visited in May and weather was lovely. Area has beautiful lush coutryside and there are plenty of places within easy driving distance to explore. Whilst we drove from Calais, Limoges airport is only about an hour away so is easy to get too and Dawn's directions were excellent.

The cottage itself is excellent. It has every conceivable thing you'd need to self cater at home, around the bbq. The pool is a generous size compared to others and is private.

Overall, a good choice for a relaxing break.
Owner's Response: Thank you!

Home from home

David and Sue Loughborough, UK
Review Submitted: January 4, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
We have spent two very enjoyable holidays based at La Briasse. The house is so obviousy a home, not just a holday let, and as a result somewhere ideal for relaxing. Set in a hamlet of three houses, the area is extremely peaceful. Dawn made us feel very welcome and responded quickly to any queries we had. She provides a comprehensive information pack with many ideas for dining and excursions.

Although there is plenty of choice for anyone wanting to eat out, the facilities at the house make self-catering so easy and such a pleasure - especially with Dawn's welcome hamper to start one off, that we inevitably dined 'at home'.

The secluded pool and the views from it are another reason to linger rather than roam - having said that, there are many interesting places to visit on foot, (the tourist office in Ayen printed off English language versions of 3 local walks for us) or within easy driving distance along empty roads.

Dawn recommended visiting the Thursday evening Farmers' Market which turned out to be a highlight of our second stay. People choose food from the various stalls, cook it on the communal barbecues (or in our case buy delicious ready-cooked trout) and sit at long tressle tables to enjoy the food while being entertained by music groups from the far-flung corners of the world. The whole village of Ayen seemed to turn out to enjoy themselves and were very welcoming to any tourists who happened along.

On both visits we found the huge Sunday market at Orgiva to be the ideal place to stock up with food (and anything else from shoes to beds!). There area several supermarkets in Orgiva which can provide anything that the market could not. We also found the bakery, butchers and general stores in Ayen to be very useful and their proprietors very welcoming and helpful.

We would recommend La Briasse for anyone seeking a relaxing base in an attractive area of France which is not as yet overrun with British tourists.
Owner's Response: Thank you so much - return guests are always the best compliment! The reference to 'Orgiva' is in fact 'Objat' - 10 minutes down the valley.

Gem in great scenic area

Arend Zoetermeer, ZH, The Netherlands
Review Submitted: September 24, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
We stayed in La Briasse for a long weekend in the 2nd half of September 2008, arriving on the Friday and leaving on the Monday and enjoyed almost every minute of our stay.
The weather was still great (>25C). We flew in with Ryanair to Limoges and had a rental from the airport. The drive to the cottage already was a pleasure and is just over an hour. Dawn sent us a route description and we didn’t have to search even one time.

The cottage is very well equipped and not just standard. The split level makes it a nicer cottage compared to the many cottages we had been before. The cottage is very functional and still very cosy and we felt quickly like being “at home”.

The living area with good couches, radio, CD, DVD, satellite with loads of entertainment present, like video’s, DVD’s and a lot of board games.

The dining area and kitchen offered more then our own house and even cooking was a pleasure. No lack of any tool.

Two spacious bedrooms with good beds. Sleeping is a pleasure as hardly any traffic is coming by and the rooms are excellent darkened to get a real rest.

The bathroom is quite big and offers a bath and separate shower and a sink and we never experienced lack of hot water. The bath is great and no taps in the way, not even when having a bath together.

But when the weather is ok, there is no wanting of being in the house. A wonderful big garden and a separate pool area drags you out of the cottage and with the sun beds, picnic tables, barbeque (area) and even a bar, it is a great place to enjoy the day and the evening. The garden is well set up and sunny from early morning till late in the evening and the plants are wonderful.

No matter which direction one will go, there are (too) many places to see and go to within 50 sq. miles. A lot of castles open to the public, Musea, waterfalls, lakes, nice little medieval towns and villages and great sceneries.

A car is needed as the cottage is at least a 15 minutes walk from the nearest village, Ayen. Great restaurants and more than reasonable pricing for “Burgundy” meals

The only remark that we could think of was the fact that the pool turned out not to be heated and with the water only 20C we discovered that it was too cold to enjoy it, after using it one time.

We can very much recommend this cottage as we were able to (re-) load our battery again in just a weekend in one of the nicest cottages in a very rural setting.
Owner's Response: Arend, thank you for your lovely comments. I am really sorry that the pool heating wasn't working - this was because the week prior to your arrival it had been very hot so I switched it off.
As you know a friend greeted you and let you in as I was away on a family visit in the North of France, where it was still very warm.
Had I known that the weather had cooled down I would have been delighted to explain how to switch it back on.
I have remedied this eventual problem by adding instructions on operation of pool heating to the book I leave at the house.
