Photos and Description of this Crozant holiday cottage
Each gite has 2 Bedrooms, 1 bathrooms, sleeping up to 4/5 people

'Les Marronniers' (The Chestnut Trees) is an idyllic former farm set in the tranquil Creuse département of France's Southwestern Limousin region, a walking and cycling paradise along riversides and through beautiful woodland where nature is pretty much undisturbed. We are situated on the edge of a pretty hamlet within a short drive (or bike ride!) of local shops, restaurants and bars, yet with 7 acres of our own private gardens and peaceful meadows. The nearby villages of Crozant with its castle ruins, and Fresselines made famous by Monet, boast spectacular views of the Rivers Creuse and Sedelle. Lake Chambon with its safe sandy beaches, fishing, water-sports, and lakeside restaurants and bars is only 10 minutes away. There is a large equestrian centre open to the public the same distance in the other direction, and golf, tennis and flying are also catered for. The famous Brenne wildlife and bird sanctuary is less than an hour away

Details for Gites 1 and 2 2 Bedrooms, Sleeps 5, 1 Bathroom

Our two gîtes are side-by-side modernised stone cottages created from what was once the second farmhouse at 'Les Marronniers', and retain many period features, such as exposed timbers and stonework. A thick stone partition wall prevents any noise passing between them. Each has a character of its own, but both are set up for comfortable holiday living for a family of four, with electric radiator heating for off-season lets (but we have never used it between April and October).

We are just two hours from the chateaux of the Loire valley, in the beautiful rural Creuse département (23) of the Limousin region, close to the borders of Indre (36) and Haute-Vienne (87). All three départements contain a wealth of attractions for every taste, from the simple pleasures of quiet country life to the lively nightlife and student scene in the regional capital, Limoges.

Within a very short distance, you will find breathtaking scenery along the banks of the River Creuse; cultural sites with strong local connections to George Sand, Chopin, Monet, Guillaumin and the other impressionists; historical towns, chateaus, ancient churches, and fortifications dating back to the days of the crusaders and even earlier; tennis, water-sports, fishing, horse-riding, nature walks, and farm visits; lake-side restaurants and bars, outdoor cafes, gourmet auberges, a state-of-the-art discotheque (4 miles from us - well out of earshot!) and even a “cottage pub”

Notes: The property has lawned gardens to front and rear, sun terraces overlooking the pool, and far-reaching views of our valley. At night, the low light pollution affords a fascinating panorama of stars – they don’t call this ‘the forgotten France’ for nothing; the Creuse is one of the most uncrowded parts of the whole country.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Crozant, France

House Parties: We are happy to negotiate discounted rates to take the whole property for up to 15 people and for non-standard periods (outside of the peak summer season). We can help you to organise airport transfers, local transport, grocery and wine shopping, catering (in-house at Les Marronniers or in nearby restaurants), festive decorations, and special events such as sightseeing, boat trips, guided nature walks, horse-back treks, balloon and light aircraft flights, musical performances, theatre, etc. We will get the best local deals for you at cost - our own services come free with our compliments!

Getting Here: Limoges Airport is just 50 minutes away on the A20 motorway (Exit 28), and has frequent flights by Ryanair from Stansted, Luton, Nottingham (EMA), Liverpool, Bournemouth, Bristol or Edinburgh, by FlyBe from Southampton, Belfast, Glasgow or Newcastle, and by Air France from other European cities. Car hire is available from the airport.

Journey time on the Eurostar from central London (Waterloo International) to Limoges is around 7 hours total.

If you prefer to drive, there are numerous motorway links from the Channel ports and Northern European countries to get you well South of Paris. From Orleans the A71, or from Tours the A85, both lead to the major interchanges at Vierzon, from where the A20 heads South past Châteauroux and on to Limoges – this section is toll-free, and usually traffic-free too

Swimming Pool, etc.: The 12 x 5 metre pool with Roman steps and built-in jacuzzi was completed in June 2004 and is surrounded by a spacious lawn and loungers. It is checked and cleaned frequently, and complies with the stringent new French safety standards. There is also a full-size trampoline, barbecues, boules, and a large selection of bicycles (and safety helmets) for you to use at no extra charge. There is a library of books and DVDs, a games room and free WiFi broadband access.

Newly introduced regulations in France set strict safety standards for swimming pools. We are supportive of this initiative and will expect you to comply with the common-sense rules for the pool, as well as other facilities. We will explain these to you when you arrive (or you can request an advance copy).

To minimise the risk of injury, or of damage to the pool liner, glass and sharp objects are not permitted within the pool compound. We are pleased to provide plastic glasses and picnic equipment for your use.

Other Activities:

Bird-watching, sailing, microlighting, flying

Comments from Owner Guestbook

Review Submitted: December 6, 2007 Date of Stay: December 2007
'It's been a very memorable two weeks. We felt completely at home in this extremely comfortable and well-equipped house and gardens. We were very touched by the kindness, hard work, sensitivity and warm welcome from Chris and Susie. Thank you for all the extra touches - you really have thought of everything even WiFi which was an extra bonus. All enjoyed the area - special memories in Argenton, Gargilesse, the lac sailing and kayaking, and the stars on a couple of nights. Keep up the good work - you're doing a great job! Helen.'

'Oh, Chris and Susie, how could you? You have made one fatal error! Outside the site you should have put the sign: WARNING! Once here, you will never want to leave!!! Love, Bethanie (Age 13 - yep, stroppy teenager).'

'I love it! Thank you, au revoir. Dominic (Age 11).'

Fab time had by all

Review Submitted: September 20, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2011
We had a wonderful two weeks here - weather was perfect, Gite was great, surroundings beautifully kept by a very busy Chris and Susie and the Limousin area just beautiful. There was plenty to do for all of us - two adults and an 11 and 14 yr old. Particularly enjoyed Lac Chambon and the facilities and the great bike rides on quiet roads. The Gite had everything we needed for a two weeks holiday and the outside space was perfect for evening meals/bbqs. Chris and Susie were perfect hosts, plying us with fresh eggs and veg from their garden, and both very knowledgeable about this part of France. This is definitely the Forgotten France, just what we needed to recharge our batteries, peace and quiet but with plenty outdoor activities on your doorstep. Really enjoyed looking at the stars in the evening and picking out the constellations - something we cannot do back home! Look forward to being able to return some time in the future. Thanks again Chris and Susie for a wonderful holiday.

Haven for the work weary!

Review Submitted: July 28, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We had a wonderful week in the Limousin. The soporific warm breeze, the very comfortablewell equiped gite, sparkling pool, friendly entertaining chickens -just the holiday we needed to recharge batteries.

As a party of 3 all over 40 we were looking for a bit of quiet respite and we were not dissapointed. Having said that there is a lot for kids to do and the three children of our gite neighbours had a busy week swiiming, cycling, playing games and just spending time together.

Everything we needed was close by and the neighbouring villages are very picturesque although we didn't do a huge amount of sight seeing as the gite and gardens are so restful and calming. When we did finally venture out it was to find that the local food was wondeful - if you get the chance, try the local potato pie, yummy. The pattiserie in the local town became a firm favourite and Chris could you send us the name of that particular 'wedding red wine' Moira keeps talking about it.

Chris and Susie thanks for making us feel so welcome, we returned home rested and ready to face the world again! Have a wonderful rest of your year.
