La Menagerie is an 18th century wine-maker’s house that was fully restored in 2005. Its surface, which is approximately 2045 square feet, can accommodate up to six adults in comfort. The renovation preserved the character of the cottage while making it as comfortable as any contemporary home. It combines antique furniture, paintings and prints, with more recent items with a touch of international contemporary design. It also offers a lot of modern amenities: broadband wireless Internet connection; a Finnish SAUNA and heating system; a flat screen TV with sound system; washer & separate dryer among others. It is composed of a large living and dining room that opens to a joint kitchen; three bedrooms, a family room, a laundry room, 2 powder rooms with a toilet and basin, and 2 full bathrooms (one at each floor). The living room features hardwood floors and wooden ceilings beams, a dining table that sits eight, and a fireplace. The kitchen has gourmet cooking utensils and equipment.

The cottage sits amidst fields, woods and vineyards near a small hamlet of four units. It is a very tranquil location though it is only 15 Km from the city of Blois and 10 Km from the famous Chateau de Cheverny. The cottage is close (about one mile) to Chitenay --a charming village with all the basic facilities, including a bakery. Paris is 195 km (or 122 miles) away from Chitenay and the city of Tours 75km (or 47 miles). The closest supermart is only 10 minutes drive from the property. This is the perfect gateway to major Renaissance Landmarks in the Central Loire Valley area, such as the Grand Chateaux of Blois, Chambord, Amboise or Chenonceau, and Clos-Luce, a mansion where Leonardo Da Vinci spent his last years, all located in a 40km/25 miles radius from the property. Playing golf at the Cheverny Golf Course', flying over the region in a hot air balloon or hunting in Sologne are among so many activities this area can offer. This is also a place for wine and food enthusiasts.

Additional information about rental rates

  • A 80 Euros fee for final cleaning and management is required. From October to April, electricity is in addition to the rental rate, based on actual consumption. For more than 2 consecutive weeks, rates can be negotiated.
    A safety deposit of €600 will be asked upon check-in. If nothing is noted during the inventory period, the safety deposit will be returned to you upon checking out. If damages are noted, the safety deposit will be forwarded to you within two months, after deduction of repairs/replacement costs or supplementary cleaning resulting from an insufficient state of cleanliness.
  • To reserve the property an initial deposit of 20% of the agreed rental price has to be transferred to the owner's Paypal account. Paypal is an online, secure server that accept various types of payment, including all credit cards ( see: www.PayPal.com )
    Once the initial deposit has been made, a confirmation receipt will be sent to you with a copy of the rental agreement. This is the formal acceptance at the time of the booking. You should return this agreement signed to me and make a second deposit of 30% at the time of your signing.
    The remainder of the rental fee (50%) will be due 45 days prior to your arrival. The payment of the initial deposits and final balance, confirms your period of rental
    If the time elapsed between your booking of the property and the arrival date is less than 45 days, then 100% of the rental price is payable at the time of your booking.
  • If the clients have to cancel their reservation, the owner’s policy is as follows: 60 days or more prior to arrival: 100% refund, less €80 fee; If the client gives less than 60 days notice, the owner will try to rent the dates that were blocked for the client. If the owner is successful a 100% refund will be sent to the client, less €80 fee.

  • The two full bathroom are large and very comfortable by international standards. The bathroom on the 1st floor has a bathtub with shower, W/C, lavabo. The bathroom on the ground floor has a large shower cabin (no bathtub), lavabo, cabinets and W/C. In addition, there are 2 cloakrooms (one on each floor) with lavabo and W/C. That is a total of 3 W/C in the cottage. All are equipped with top of the line hardware and cutting edge amenities and faucets (Villeroy & Boch, etc).

'I would definitely recommend La Menagerie. The design of the cottage is
fantastic - it has maintained its country house character while
including all of the modern conveniences. The well-equipped kitchen made
it ideal for cooking and tasting the quality food from the region. And
the location is fantastic- only a couple of hours from Paris, close to
the Chateaux of the Loire and in a quiet spot away from other houses and
traffic.
It was the perfect retreat from a place like Hong Kong.

Amazing escape!

"We had the most fantastic and enjoyable few days at "La Menagerie", from the warmth of welcome from Patrick to all the help and support from the locals! Ideally located, amidst some stunning villages, slightly isolated and so very quiet, but with the bikes from the barn, the local area became easily accessible! The house itself is awesome for relaxation, but has so much to offer from the Swimming Pool to the sauna and open fireplace.......we only had 2 problems....insufficient time to enjoy everything, and of course too much stunning fresh food from the local Markets!!!! Thank you again for a fantastic week."

I would recommend the Menagerie without reservation. Everything about it was excellent - the setting, the furnishings, decor, kitchen. If you want to stay in the Loire then you must give this place a try - it's superb. My wife is extremely difficult to please and she says it's the best place we've ever stayed!

Quiet, seclusion, and comfort in the Loire

"My eleven-year-old daughter and I had a lovely quiet time at La Menagerie, after a jolly greeting from Bernadette, who was thrilled to pieces that we spoke at least school-girl French. The house is truly delightful, the setting peaceful yet central to the sights, and all the details made our stay really pleasant. We never met Philippe, but he watered the garden and tended the pool in our absence.
La Menagerie is a charming base from which to explore the chateaux by car, follow the well-marked bike loops, hike the Grand Randonnée (GRP) footpaths, browse the markets, and then laze by the pool with a book. We biked over hill and dale to local smaller chateaux, with strategic stops for creme glacée. Other days, I drove us farther afield on epic outings along the Loire, Cher or Indre. We would return after our day's adventures, dip in the pool, and my daughter would bathe while I poured wine, put on a CD, and made dinner in your well-appointed kitchen. A sunset bike ride along the country lanes rounded off the evening.
All the best comforts of home in a charming setting.

An ideal location for a relaxing holiday

We arrived at La Menagerie with some trepidation, having had previous bad experiences, so imagine our delight when we pulled up outside and the house was exactly like the photos. Inside the property was also as described with every possible need catered for. We spent an idyllic 8 days, we had planned to do more touring but to be honest everyone was so happy and relaxed that we spent more time at the house, well by the pool really, especially the girls!! Even the sun shone for us...

The local area was beautiful, especially Amboise, and the locals have a much more relaxed view to life than in other areas of France. Bernadette was fantastic, she couldn't do enough for us and the girls enjoyed their visits to her garden to see the animals and returned with eggs from her chickens or tomatoes that she had grown - all of which tasted better than anything you can buy in a supermarket!!

This property was above and beyond what we had hoped for. We enjoyed the whole experience and will definitely return.
