Outdoors at St Surin
This beautiful chateau dating back to 1477 is bliss for summer living. Approached by a 200 metre drive way, the grand gates give you an idea of the gem you are about to discover. The chateau is set in over 3 hectares of private grounds. The pool house and area is out of this world. There is a roofed seating area with iron furniture and sofas looking over the pool. There is a built in BBQ area and the 13m x 7m pool has a large shallow area but deepens to almost 3m by the end. There are sunloungers, chairs and tables. It is completely sheltered and private – an awesome suntrap. The pool is alarmed for safety and complies with recent legislation. The varied walks from the chateau complete this perfect French hideaway! The owners live in the guardian's cottage and are on hand to assist when needed but give guests complete privacy and exclusive use of all facilities such as the pool and pool area.
Activities near St Surin
The area is packed full of activities if you can tear yourself away from the poolside. The town of Castillones is just a 5 minute drive away and there are restaurants to cater for all tastes and budgets. If you prefer to cook for yourselves, the local markets offer wonderfully fresh local produce. They are fantastic for a morning out, experiencing the french way of life. The Dordogne is steeped in history. From the prehistoric caves at Lascaux to the medieval chateaux and fortified bastide villages and towns. For those with more energy, the range of sports activities is great. There are a number of golf courses all within a short drive. The Dordogne and Vezere rivers offer canoeing, swimming or just lazing on one of the many beaches. There is fishing, horse riding, cycling, tennis all close by.
How to get here
St Surin is extremely accessible with Bergerac airport only 30 minutes drive away. There are daily low cost flights with Ryanair flying from Stansted, Nottingham and Liverpool and Flybe flying from Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham and Exeter. Bordeaux airport is only about 1hr 45 minutes drive away, with Toulouse slightly further taking about 2 hours. There is car hire available at all the airports. We find that the most relaxing drive from the UK is from St Malo in about 6 1/2 hours, leaving Portsmouth with Brittany Ferries and throughout the summer they are doing night crossings both ways. Although it is not the cheapest ferry, it is a great way to start the holiday. A slightly longer drive is from Calais in about 9 hours. There are fast links by train by Eurostar (Waterloo/Ashford) with connections to Bergerac, Marmande and Libourne. Marmande is the quickest and is only 30 minutes away. You can also motorail to Brive which is approximately 2 hours drive away.
