Things to do on holiday in Lot-et-Garonne

Lot-et-Garonne gites are in some of the most beautiful villages in France. Of the forty medieval towns in the department, Domme, Belves and Sarlat are the most famous due to the stunning architecture on display. Cycle touring in Lot-et-Garonne is a great way to see the Chateaus at Bonaguil, Duras or Poudenas, and investigate the countryside.

Lot-et-Garonne also offers some very good trout, bass and carp fishing on the rivers Lot, Baise, Garonne and Lateral, and permits are available from angling shops. Taking to the waterways of the Lot-et-Garonne in a boat or canoe is considered a wonderfully relaxing way to discover the riverside towns and villages at a slow pace, and you can often pop into local markets for delicacies such as fois gras and local wines. This can be done on stretches of the Rivers Baise, Lot and Garonne, and the Garonne Canal.

Places to holiday in Lot-et-Garonne, France

Agen, the capital of the prune, is one of the most impressive ‘Bastides’ from the thirteenth century. It has one of very few examples of a double nave in its Cathedral de St Caprais. However, for the largest bastide town is at Monflanquin, and the bastide museum in the main square tells you all you need know on the history and influence of the era.

Lauzun, in the north of the department, is a charming rural village with access to some of the best fishing in the region. The small shops and restaurants provide hand crafted produce of the highest quality.

Marmande, another fascinating bastide town, founded in 1195 also provides the base for walking, climbing, canyoning, cave tours and boat trips. It has a lively centre, lots of activities on offer, and yet retains its historic value.

Lot-et-Garonne has warm dry summers, perfect for golfing or cruising down the river, with temperatures reaching around 25°C in the summer. The winters can be cold, sometimes reaching freezing point in December, January and February.
