Charming, rose clad barn with secluded garden in quiet hamlet

The rose clad stone cottage (originally a barn conversion), and updated by us, is typically French with mainly tiled floors, some exposed stone walls, timber ceilings and beams. As our second home, we have used high quality furniture and furnishings throughout. The large open plan séjour, furnished with comfortable sofa and chairs, etc. has an open fire, dining area with table and chairs, plus fully functional kitchen (with washing machine and dishwasher), semi-partitioned off at one end. The bedrooms are light and airy, with large windows looking out into the garden. The large French windows from the séjour lead you straight into the small, south facing, secluded garden, bounded by the remains of old, now climber-clad, stone walls giving it a ‘cloisterish’ feel with fruit trees in the centre for shade. There is a gas BBQ, loungers and garden table and chairs.

THIS IS RURAL, OLD TRADITIONAL FRANCE at its best, once home of the Cathars, fought over for generations and steeped in history, evidenced by the dominance of Bastide towns with enormous castles built on amazing pinnacles, often above treacherous gorges. Our local Najac (20 min drive), ‘Un des plus Beau Villages de France’, is but one, as are beautiful Cordes-sur-Ciel, Villefrance de Rouergue, Sauverterre de Rouergue and Conques. This region of the Aveyron is an area of outstanding natural beauty, famous for its gastronomy, Gaillac wines, culture and architecture. The way of life here is leisurely, charmingly French. Amazing and colourful markets are held in most towns once a week and a trip to Albi for its architecture, cathedral and shopping as well as the Toulouse-Lautrec Museum is well worthwhile. Adventure, be it canoeing on the Aveyron, cycling or horse riding is available within 30-odd min drive. Within 40 min is a 1,600 acre sports park for the even more adventurous!

Local activities cycling, fishing, horse riding, mountain biking, paragliding, swimming, tennis, walking, water skiing

Notes to the rental rates

  • We are happy to accept € (euros) at the prevailing rate if this helps. The cottage caters for 4 people only. However, in rare circumstances we could take 6, but PLEASE enquire with us at the time of booking; this is VITAL!! We require, please, 50% booking deposit with the balance payable 8 weeks prior to departure along with a returnable damage deposit of £200.
  • Please note that our changeover days are SUNDAYS.
  • In addition to Toulouse Blagnac (TLS), which is serviced by several airlines (notably Easyjet and Flybe), Ryanair flies to Rodez-Marcillac (RDZ). TLS to La Montarnie is c.125 km (c. 75 miles). We do the trip 2-4 times a year. We're in our 60s and don't find it onerous! There's a 'half-way' cafe at the charming Cordes-sur-Ciel (probably not open in October. RDZ is closer, at c. 50 km (+/- 30 miles), but Ryanair's departures are from Stansted (STN) only. Bon voyage!

Activities

This area of Midi Pyrenees is famous for its bastide towns in stunningly beautiful locations. The Gorge d'Aveyron offers peerless walking and exciting river activities in matchless scenery. Activities include canoeing and kayaking at picturesque Najac and St. Antonin Noble Val (the latter being the location of the French resistance film 'Charlotte Grey'). There are swimming pools at Najac and Rieupeyroux, tennis courts in most villages, river swimming and horse riding not far afield and a huge sports park at Carmaux, offering everything from paragliding to dry slope snowboarding! Most towns, large and small, hold bustling, colourful weekly markets.

Gastronomy and Vineyards

We are fortunate to have reasonably priced restaurants locally in Najac, some small with terraces from which to enjoy the views of the castle lit up at night and the Gorge itself, way, way below. More sophisticated is highly regarded L'Oustal du Barry - a real treat! Cordes-sur-Ciel boasts of one of the largest number of highly rated restaurants in France. As for vineyards, Gaillac (half an hour beyond Cordes) is the centre for highly fancied wine, with most vineyards offering 'degustation' before purchase! The annual Gaillac wine festival is worth a visit if you are in the area in September. Southern Aveyron is also the home of Roquefort cheese. They complement each other rather nicely!

Historic towns

One can hardly come to this part of France and not to be stunned by some of the beautiful towns and architecture in the area. There are bastide towns like Najac, Cordes-sur-Ciel, Villefrance de Rouerge and Sauverterre de Rouergue in close proximity. Belcastel, St. Antonin Noble Val, and Conque a little further afield are well worth a visit too.

Other Activities Kayaking and canoeing.
