Beautiful, tranquil and steeped in history,
Aveyron offers a wonderful insight into rural France with its fertile valleys, windswept plateaux, deep gorges and unspoilt medieval villages. Our immediate area includes the lovely old bastide towns of Sauveterre Rouergue, La Bastide L'Eveque and Villefranche de Rouergue as well as a myriad quaint villages, ruined castles and the magnificent fortress at Najac. Further afield is Cordes-sur-Ciel and the great abbey at Conques, one of the finest and best preserved of mediaeval religious communities. Coming up to present times, the birthplace of Toulouse-Lautrec the painter is just 30 minutes drive and Norman Foster's spectacular viaduct at Millau is only an hour away. Each of the towns and villages in the area has its own fairs, festivals and brocantes to provide an absorbing excuse to wander the ancient streets and meadows.
For the food and wine lover
there are a myriad small restaurants and cafes offering the excellent Aveyron cuisine - duck, veal, foie gras and aligot feature on most menus. For the gourmet, there are world-class restaurants at Sauveterre Rouergue, Belcastel and of course Michel Bras at Laguiole, rated 11th in Restaurant Magazine's 'The World's 50 Best Restaurants 2005'. There is a wide range of local cheeses to sample, from the well known Roquefort, Cantal and Rocamadour, to the delicious sheep's cheeses of the south and west. For the vinophile, the southwest and Languedoc-Roussillon probably offer better value for money and more hidden bargains than any other area in France. Within easy reach are the three wine-growing regions of Gaillac, Marcillac and Cahors while the local shops are well supplied with a wide range of little-known and often excellent appellations.
For the outdoors enthusiast and sportsperson
there are beautiful walks or rides of varying length and difficulty from your front door. The Viaur and the Aveyron rivers offer safe swimming and paddling for all the family - or fishing and canoeing in their spectacular river gorges. Nearby Rieupeyroux has an indoor and outdoor swimming pool and tennis courts. Sailing and water-skiing are available at Lac de Pareloup just the other side of Rodez. The Parc Animalier at Pradinas is a few minutes from Salettes and provides a fascinating opportunity to see the larger local fauna - wild boar, wolves and deer - in their natural surroundings. For the winter visitor, the ski-lifts of the Aubrac are a scenic one-and-a-half hour drive to the north. They offer uncrowded downhill skiing for all the family as well as many kilometres of groomed cross-country trails. Then it's back to warm stone walls and a blazing log fire at Salettes!
