Le Padouen - a charming 17th Century farmhouse gite

Le Padouen is a 17th-century farmhouse situated in a village between Castelnau-Magnoac and the Pyrénées. The house is arranged around a grass courtyard with vines growing around the windows and views over the surrounding hillside and the mountain peaks in the distance. A large grassed rear garden sets off a private swimming pool and a paved BBQ area for evening meals or just to sit and watch the butterflies under the old walnut tree. And there is also plenty to do once you've recharged your batteries… riding, cycling, walking in the mountains – and skiing in winter – or visiting local caves or the shrine at Lourdes.

The nearest town is Castelnau-Magnoac, about five miles away, with its market square – and very good Saturday market with local produce – stone and colombage architecture, bank, mini market, boulangeries and patisseries, boucherie and tapas bar. A little further in the other direction is the much larger town of Lannemezan. For skiers (November-March), and from this year snow scooters, the Val de Louron resorts such as Saint Lary-Soulan are easily accessible in around 30 minutes. If you would like a day out to the coast, the Atlantic and the Mediterranean coasts are a two-hour drive away. There are many restaurants and auberges in the local area serving fresh produce using only ingredients produced on the farm – especially ‘confit’ and ‘magret de canard’, foie gras and cassoulet – at prices from the past in the UK. The food and fresh produce is wonderful.

Activities

The Hautes Pyrénées offers more than just 'high mountains'. Le Padouen is set on the edge of the plains which stretch towards Toulouse and at the foot of the hills which climb gradually up towards Spain. This diverse region has attracted travellers for hundreds of years and the wealth of activities available locally is tribute to the burgeoning industry catering to those 'in the know'. Why not come on holiday and learn while you play with one of the following (just contact me on reservation for help booking any of these):

Local activities with special discounts

• River fishing with Monsieur Gambin at Le Vivier in Lannemezan (15 mins away)... • French lessons with a qualified French teacher, who will come to the house by arrangement and teach you at a pace convenient for you... •Fly light aircraft. For a fantastic view of the Pyrénées, you can't beat seeing it from the air! We are very close to the light aircraft pilot training school and Aero Club, pictured right, off the main road to nearby Castelnau-Magnoac (10 mins away). Pleasure trips also run regularly. •Walking through peaceful valleys, following the ‘routes de la résistance’ through to Spain, taking in medieval hill forts, with nothing to hear but the jingle of cow bells.

Also…

Whether it is boating at the nearby Lac d'Astarac, climbing or rafting in the mountains, the Hautes Pyrénées offers all the peace and tranquillity of ‘le temps perdu’. You can explore caves (‘grottes’, like the Gouffre de l’Espaross, pictured right) with prehistoric cave paintings or take a boat trip through les Grottes de Medous and swims in cooling mountain lakes watching the eagles and other wild birds of prey. Other local attractions include: • le Pic du Midi (alt. 2877) – visible from the village and accessed by cable car – offers fantastic views from the summit, an astronomy observatory, shop and restaurant. • Lourdes with the shrine to Bernadette is under l hr away. While there take the funicular to the Pic de Jer, again with spectacular views.

Skiing Information:

• In the winter months, of course, the ski resort of Saint Lary-Soulan offers superb skiing and great apès-ski! (45 mins away).

Golf Information:

Lannemezan golf club, an 18 hole course open all year round, with a restaurant, a pro shop, beginner and advanced lessons from the resident pro Monsieur S. Imbertie (15 mins away). Three days of green fees, from £50 per person (excl club hire and pro lessons).

I'm, Carole, Tom, Henry and George Cornes from The Wirral, UK
'We've had a beautiful two weeks. The house was a lovely surprise – very nicely furnished, with all we needed. The children loved the swimming pool. Castelnau Magnoac seemed very unspoilt. Market day was enjoyable, and there seem to be events on mid-week. We went to see a motorbike show which the boys loved. The locals were really friendly despite our poor French…'

Mary and David Fishburn, North Yorkshire, UK
'So glad we found you – the gods were smiling on us for sure. Thank you for all your kindness – we truly appreciated all your care…'
