Around the pigeonnier, there are delightful market towns of great history and beauty, such as : Moissac’s famous 12th century cloister; Cahors, in a horseshoe bend of the Lot river; Toulouse, the cosmopolitan “pink city” or the medieval hilltop villages of Lauzerte, Montcuq, Roquecor and Penne d’Agenais. Particularly interesting day outings are the Bordeaux wine areas of Sauternes and Médoc, with their great châteaux and wine cellars. The prehistoric painted caves at Lascaux, cradle of humankind; Carcassonne, the largest medieval fortified town in Europe. The Gorges de l’Aveyron with their spectacular canyons, magnificent scenery and villages, a great place for canoeing. The bastide towns in southern Dordogne, and many gastronomic high places in Perigord and Quercy.
