Approached by a long avenue, this beautiful old stone farmhouse sits in total seclusion on five acres of garden and wooded hillside. Spread out before it lies a panorama of rolling countryside, woodland, vineyards and, on clear days, the distant peaks of the Pyrenees. The house itself is charming. While retaining the beauty and simplicity of an 18th century farmhouse, Lasserre is a very comfortable family home. The rooms are graced with original hand hewn beams, heavy oak doors, and original plaster walls with exposed beams and lovely old terracotta floors. This house is our home for a portion of the year and consequently has been furnished to a comfortably high standard with favorite pictures and books, antique family furniture, and quality appliances. This area of Southwest France, the Tarn, is a particularly pretty and unspoilt region. The countryside is a patchwork of vineyards, maize, sunflowers and woodland dotted with ancient farmhouses and historic towns.

Lasserre is located in a particularly pretty and unspoilt part of Southwest France. This is the area of Bastide towns such as Cordes sur Ciel and Carcassonne, fortified hill towns rising up into the sky with enchanting twisting streets and covered market places. There are fields of grapes, sunflowers, and cattle. The countryside rolls gently up to the Forêt de la Grésigne, the largest oak forest in Europe. Lasserre sits on a hill looking toward the south over woodland, pastures and sunflowers. There is an abundance of wildlife, including two resident falcons. Lasserre benefits from total seclusion surrounded by nothing but forest, fields, and vineyards. We are just a few minutes drive from the pretty town of Castelnau de Montmiral with a boulangerie, small shops, pharmacy, café, post office and excellent restaurant. The market town and wine centre of Gaillac is about ten minutes away with shops, restaurants and cafés. The cultural centres of Albi and Toulouse are within 45 minutes.

A lovely old pigeonnier forms one side of the courtyard in front of the house. A large stable attached at the side of the house acts as storage for bicycles, boules, and table tennis. In the sunny courtyard in front of the house, a large table and umbrella provide a relaxing spot for meals, and there is a large charcoal Weber grill. The 10 meter x 5 meter swimming pool sits in a private garden near the house; the depth graduates from 4 to 5 feet. There are lounge chairs as well as additional seating and small tables. Shade is provided by a pergola with a dining table and chairs. Pool towels are provided.

How to spend your time: In this area of Southwest France, there are wonderful cathedrals to visit such as Albi and Toulouse; historic towns to explore; vineyards for wine tasting; beautiful, quiet roads for cycling; forests for walking; markets full of fresh produce and regional specialities;.and rivers for canoeing and fishing. Or one can do nothing but enjoy the peace and tranquility at Lasserre:coffee and croissants outside in the morning; lunch under the pergola at the pool with with fresh cheeses and produce from the market; dinner cooked on the barbecue and eaten at the table in the courtyard while falcons circle overhead. Books, both serious and not so, games, DVDs, videos, good food and wine - all combine to make an idyllic family holiday or a quiet retreat.

We are staying at Lasserre and simply felt compelled to drop a quick recommendation to say how much we love the place. It has the most peaceful, tranquil atmosphere which is perfect for anyone seeking solitude and rejuvenation in idyllic rural surroundings. The delightful gardens are at the moment full of scented lavender and bound by beautiful countryside where the fields are full of golden corn and vineyards.

The nearest bastide town, Castlenau is typical of many beautiful villages in this area and has plenty to stimulate the eye and a great restaurant is found at the Hotel de Consul. There also is a well stocked local store with everything you might need.

We have never stayed anywhere quite so well equipped and the house is furnished extremely tastefully. We slept in the spacious master bedroom suite which is very beautifully laid out with white linen and comfortable old victorian bed - the height of unpretensious luxury!

My wife and I went out for a cycle ride down to the delightful hamlet of St Jerome this morning ....... quite heavenly. We so appreciate touches like allowing the guests to use the absent owners bikes......what fun!

I'm writing this note on my laptop by the pool as a diversion to composing a score to my next movie, whilst my wife luxuriates in the warm July sun. On returning indoors, a wi-fi cyber connection is on hand for all those needing a point of communication.

Whilst we made this trip sans chickadee - there is plenty here to keep a family with children entertained with space for all.

We leave on Wednesday and return to Somerset, England whence our hectic lives resume but we wanted to say thank you.

We stayed at Lasserre twice in both spring and autumn 2005/6 for 6 weeks at a time and had the most marvellous break. The house is beautifully appointed and well equipped in a gorgeous area of the midi pyrenees. The surrounding farmland and peaceful setting gave us the most tranquil environment for our holidays. The owners were helpful and made sure we had all we needed, we particularly enjoyed the very private pool. The close access to Castelnau de Montimiral and Gaillac made shopping and eating out easy. Highly recommended for both old and young, a truly delightful property.
