The village of Najac is one of the’ plus beau villages de France' The house stands on the south side of a fine medieval street (mostly pedestrian) that leads to the Chateau. Owned and completely restored and furnished by a potter/furniture maker to the highest standards. Inspired by the traditional inns of Japan [ryokan). It offers a calm environment created with natural materials; local woods (wild cherry, elm, oak, ash), for the furniture, raw silk, hand made ceramics and celadon tableware, original paintings. Najac is perched on a ridge of rock high above a horseshoe bend in the Aveyron River. The village snakes along the spine up to the chateau. Most of this imposing castle is 13th century & was fortified by Alphonse de Poitiers, Comte de Toulouse, during the Albigeoise crusade (Cathar). Later, under the King, Phillippe le Bel, it was requisitioned as a prison for the Templiers. It fell into English hands during the hundred year’s war, until in 1368, it was returned to the Comte de Toulouse. Most of the houses in Najac are XVIth century & some of the older dating from XIVth century. There are two fountains, the oldest carved from a single piece of granite. This is the fountain in front of the house. The countryside is cut with deep wooded valleys, perfect for walking or visiting the historic sites nearby; hill top villages, bastide towns, the Toulouse Lautrec museum in Albi, or visiting the weekly markets, fetes & antique markets that almost every village has over the summer.

Walking:: The area around Najac is one of the finest in France for walking. The landscape is deeply cut by the winding gorges of the two rivers Viaur and Aveyron. The valleys are forested & quite wild, but easily accessible by clearly marked walks. Fine and varied domestic architecture abounds; beautiful clusters of houses in hamlets & villages often perched, like the medieval château, on prominent strategic points above the rivers. Within a few kilometres of Najac, one finds great variety of interest, Roman bridges, abandoned copper mines, & bastide towns like Villefranche-de-Rouergue, & Cordes. After thirteen years here in the Najac area, we still have much to discover and will be pleased to help our guests see some of it. We recommend April, May, June, Sept and Oct for walking & offer our guests two guided walks per week during these months. Bird watching here is excellent. Canoeing, rock climbing, & other sports are available. River swimming is first-rate and safe for all ages.

Village: In the village there are café-bars, a baker, grocery shop, newsagent, pharmacy and a Doctor. Good restaurants of all price ranges and in the summer months, a Sunday market, but there are no discos! The municipal swimming pool and tennis courts are open in the summer. Najac is well served by rail. Daily services to and from Toulouse, Villefranche-de-Rouergue, Figeac, Rodez and Paris. Toulouse airport is 1 ½ hours from Najac and Rodez 1 hour.

Pottery: We are 10 minutes from the village and offer the chance to take pottery lessons. From beginner to more advanced level, all ages are welcome, please contact us for more details.

A Jewel in the Heart of the Aveyron

Donna & Don New Mexico, USA
Review Submitted: August 3, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
Over the course of an extended holiday in Europe, we rented 3 different properties and without a doubt Le Bourguet was the best of them all. The house has a stunning view from the terrace of the wooded hills and deep gorge of the Aveyron River that passes below the village of Najac. The furnishings are stylish and comfortable and reflect the many talents and loving care of the property owners; all handmade furniture and original artwork. The location in the center of historic Najac was perfect--only a short walk to the village shops with the reward of views of the chateau on the return. The owners have thought of every detail--right down to the welcoming bouquet of wildflowers!

Wonderful Stay.

Najac is a little gem waiting to be discovered. The approach to the village is absolutely stunning. On arriving at our holiday home we were a little taken aback to find it had a " shop" window (which is only used to display Maureen's superb pottery) but once inside we found it to be the most delightful house imaginable. The handmade furniture and pottery were superb and the house was equipped with everything you could wish for a perfect holiday. The main bedroom was large and airy and the bed was very comfortable. And as for the view from the balcony - it was stunning!! Apart from one day we ate out there every day.
The Sunday market in the village was a little disappointing but we made up for it by visiting the market in Villefranche on Thursday. Go by train - it's much more relaxing. We can highly recommend this unspoilt area of France for a holiday especially if you stay at this gem of a property.

The house was bigger than we expected. It was very well kept and clean. It was ideally located in the village within easy walking distance of all the local amenities.
I would recommend it to anyone wanting to stay in this area of France.

A Unique Experience

Jim and Barbara East Sussex, England
Review Submitted: October 17, 2009 Date of Stay: October 2009
Wonderful location, clean and comfortable, exceptionally well equipped.
All the crockery and furniture made by Peter.
Owners always on hand in case of problems(which there were none!)
Our stay was the first week of October and the daytime temperature reached the mid to high twenties.
Plenty of literature, maps etc for ideas for days out.
Would not hesitate to recommend this unique holiday accommodation.
Najac is in a superb location and makes an ideal base to explore the surrounding region.

A Lovely Gîte in a Great Setting

Corby and Nick Decorah, IA, USA
Review Submitted: August 14, 2009 Date of Stay: March 2009
My husband and I had a delightful stay in this beautiful house. The property is very well equipped and clean, everything in good working order. The owners, Peter and Maureen, were helpful, providing maps and information about what to see and do in the region. There are lovely markets close by and great walking trails right from the village; Najac is very well situated and rich in history. When we arrived at the house we were greeted with fresh flowers, beautiful furnishings, and a well appointed kitchen. There is also a balcony which we were able to enjoy, even as early as March. We highly recommend this rental property and hope to return to Najac in the near future.
