Condom (in historic Gascony) is the commercial centre of Armagnac land. The same latitude as Nice, the Gers offers sunshine without crowds. The Guardian calls Condom “an old traditional town in the best part of France.” The Observer calls it “one of the best places to stay in Armagnac territory … peaceful without being too sleepy, charming without being prettified.” Often called French Tuscany, the Gers is rich in heritage, superb climate, great food, activities, and friendly welcoming locals! --Go sightseeing: Condom is central to so much! The land of d'Artagnan, the St. Jacques de Compostello pilgrim route, unspoilt countryside, sunflowers, orchards, vineyards. Dozens of picturesque warm-hearted villages (many with sports venues), fortified “bastide” towns, galleried arcades & market squares from the Hundred Years War - all nearby. Slightly further afield (just 2 hours) you can swim the Mediterranean or Atlantic. Visit Biarritz, Bordeaux, Carcassonne & Pau. Ski or hike the Pyrénées.

You will find great pools, natural lakes with sandy beaches, even spas and thermal cures. --Town & country: Though the property is in town, it has a lovely, private terraced garden for dining al fresco and watching the children play. Plus, the garden overlooks a huge private grass field and orchard (see photos), offering real privacy and rural ambiance. Though the feel is country, you can walk to great dining (and more importantly, walk home again). And walk to a different bakery each morning!

Further details for this holiday house rental in Gers, France

Activities in the Gers - Gascony: There is something for everyone in Gascony. And Condom is the perfect base for countless excursions. Many towns (including Condom) offer swimming pools or sandy-beach lakes for sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, and diving. Condom is a great town for Antiquing. Beautiful golf courses nearby (most with excellent reasonably priced restaurants), horse racing, horse riding, bullfighting, tennis, flying & microlighting, spas and thermal cures, museums. Theme parks - one features the environment, another allows young & old to walk in the treetops. Boating and Canoeing: Hop on a lunch or dinner cruise, or hire your own to explore the River Baise. Classical music concerts: Condom offers weekly concerts during the summer. Visit the Musée d'Armagnac & learn how it differs from Cognac. Explore dozens of picturesque nearby villages, or venture a bit further: Atlantic Coast (Biarritz, etc.), the stunning medieval city of Toulouse, Bordeaux, Pau, & the Pyrenees (for hiking or skiing).

Wine, Dine, Armagnac, and Markets: You are a short walk to many superb local restaurants. Enjoy memorable (& great value) dining. Dining in Armagnac, duck, and Foie Gras country is a highlight of Gascon life. Just 2 hours from Mediterranean & the Atlantic, seafood too is wonderful. Gascons are justly proud of their wines, Armagnac & floc (a local aperitif). Try a Pousse Rapiere from chateau St. Puy – add it to their sparkling wine, drink, then sit. Wine tasting & ancient Armagnac chateaux tours (21 nearby) are available year round for tours & tasting. Condom is a market town: Wednesdays & Saturdays. Daily you will want to try the many local bakeries, fruit/veggie stands, the fish monger & specialty food shops. Bring home local produce, meat & fish to your gourmet kitchen, open a nice local wine, & dine al fresco on the terrace. If you love the markets, festivals, sunflowers, beauty, history & cuisine of rural France, holiday in Gascony. They say Gascons live longest of all in France. Holiday here - you will understand.

Festivals, Outdoor Music, Fêtes, Vide Greniers: From April on, towns begin their Vide Greniers (car boot sales without cars), open air markets, & annual fêtes. Each weekend has several beckoning - we try to visit them all. The fêtes normally offer food & local produce for sale, music, lunch or dinner & dancing under the stars. Annual music festivals include the internationally famous jazz at Marciac, Country Music in Mirande, Tempo Latino in Vic Fezensac, Condom's frequent classical music events & Condom's annual Bandas festival in May, Agricultural festivals, Garlic & more. Live music is featured at most outdoor events. Churches & cathedrals, notably the nearby Abbeye de Flaran, offer concerts throughout the year. Each of the dozens of local towns & villages are picturesque & worth a visit. Many are a mere 10 minute drive. Great opportunities to meet welcoming locals, enjoy the ambiance, the refreshment, and dance. I keep a big notebook at the house with info, suggestions & contact detail for tons of local activities & events.

Other Activities: wine tasting, armagnac tasting

A gorgeous house in a beautiful town

Zim Oxford
Review Submitted: June 3, 2008 Date of Stay: May 2008
Condom is a French secret: pretty, quiet, and peaceful; but there's still a few decent places to eat and interesting things to see. Combined with friendly locals, this is fine place to stay. The rental property is a homely, spacious residence, with excellent facilities, and in a good location. I, and the group of friends with which I travelled, had an relaxed and enjoyable time here. We strongly recommend it.

Owner's Response: I too think of Condom as a French secret - and an especially pleasant surprise waiting to be discovered.

A delightful home and a great place to stay.

Review Submitted: December 3, 2008 Date of Stay: October 2008
Condom is a town full of character and this charming "bourgeois" house was in the perfect location for us to get the most from our stay.
The very full description of the property and its amenities were both accurate and complete (no nasty surprises). We stayed in October as the evenings were becoming cooler, so the modern central heating (a very useful feature) kept us as warm as we wanted. The house is located on a very quiet, well lit street with free on street parking directly in front.
Inside this feels like someone's home and not just a rental property. The kitchen is very well equipped, the one bathroom has hot water as hot as you want, the family room has plenty of comfortable seating, the bedrooms are fully carpeted and our bed gave us a good night's sleep.
Having our own secluded garden with a terrace and even a first floor balcony made outdoor eating and relaxing a private pleasure.
If you want to stay in town then this house is just right.

Lovely Autumn Holiday

Chingro Christchurch, New Zealand
Review Submitted: October 24, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
A group of nine of us from New Zealand stayed for two weeks at this delightful and well-located property in Condom. The property is clean and well-maitained, positioned in a lovely town with many surrounding attractions well-described by the owners. The property catered for all ages, with abundant movies and games supplied. Despite the large size of our party, there was plenty of room, while the Autumn weather allowed us to enjoy the outdoor spaces. The owners and their agents gave wonderful, friendly service and we had no problems at all in renting the property. I can thoroughly recommend a stay here in this lovely part of the world.

5, Rue de la Paix, Condom

Nikname Worcester, Worcs. England
Review Submitted: October 19, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
We had a most enjoyable holiday in this house which is very conveniently placed for walking to and from the local facilities, particularly the restaurants. The patio and garden area are particularly pleasant. The description is accurate and the property is clean and well maintained - the caretakers who are very obliging and pleasant people obviously do a good job. We found the local area, particularly the villages round about, very interesting with lots of old buildings and we had a morning in Auch which is well worth a visit. We also visited Lourdes (OK but the commercialism was ghastly) and the Pyrenees (superb) but it was a bit far for a day trip -about 200 miles in total.
As we had two cars we found the parking outside in the street a little difficult at times but if you only have one car there should not be a problem.

A very successful in town holiday

Sophiedogs' mom Sarasota, FL USA
Review Submitted: July 19, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
Our party of three adults thoroughly enjoyed this stay in Condom. We loved the guiet, but in town ,location. We found our temporary home very comfortable and spacious and were able to eat most of our "at home" meals on the patio. There is great pleasure in enjoying a local wine with the produce of the outdoor markets, a bread still warm from the bakery and the birds twittering about.
We found that the owners had provided an abundance of information on the area, attractions and restaurants. It is a very lovely area of France and because there is so little traffic on the small roads, we sallied forth every day to explore the many old bastides and villages.....a very non stressful area for driving, if one is armed with the Michelin #336 Local map.
This is a very rural and laidback area with much farming, wine production and products which are unique to the area. We found people very eager to share and have us sample their products and we were "market groupies", driving to various towns on their market days.
Another plus in our rented property was a vast collection of movie DVDs.......great way to relax in the evening, after a busy day out and after dinner in one of the many local restaurants.
All in all...a lovely home in a special part of France.
