La Loutre is an old stone cottage on the edge of the hillside hamlet of Gaillac, overlooking a meander of the river Lot, with beautiful views on three sides. The medieval town of Cajarc is less than 2 miles away. The cottage has two bedrooms, sleeping 5 comfortably, but there's also a sofa bed and a baby cot. The pretty village of St Cirq Lapopie is nearby and the Grottes du Peche Merle – famed for their prehistoric cave paintings – are a short drive away. A day trip to Cahors is also highly recommended – only 20 miles away along the picturesque road hugging the River Lot – and Figeac is about the same distance in the other direction along the River Cele. It's an excellent area for fishing and walking. In fact one of the St Jacques de Compostelle routes passes the door.

La Loutre on the edge of the hillside hamlet of Gaillac, about 3 km from the medieval town of Cajarc, and close to Cahors and Figeac. Cajarc is situated in the Parc Naturel Regional des Causses du Quercy, part of the Département of Lot, once the ancient province of Quercy. It is close to the boundary with the Département of Aveyron.

  • The first bedroom has classic pine furniture and a large fireplace. It is decorated with prints by Henri Martin, Picasso and Lautrec. Martin was an Impressionist, originally from Toulouse, who studied in Paris - earning a gold medal at the Salon of 1889. He finally settled at Saint-Cirq Lapopie and produced some of his finest work in the Lot Valley. There are fantastic river views from two aspects of this room. The second bedroom has dark chinese style furnishings and is decorated with Picasso line drawings - the famous 'Dove of Peace' and 'Sleeping Woman' as well as the less well known lithograph 'Francoise en forme de soleil'. This room has a more sheltered aspect - with a fig tree outside the window.

Notes: Children are welcome, but the house does overhang the river Lot, so toddlers would have to be under constant supervision. From personal experience, we would recommend the house to groups of adults, or families with a baby or older children who can be trusted not to climb out of windows or off the terrace, but anyone with adventurous toddlers might not have a very restful time! There are two front entrances to the house, one of which is up 2 shallow steps, and all rooms are on the ground floor with no internal steps, so it is pretty accessible.

We had a lovely stay in la Loutre. The river views are amazing - it was lovely to get up in the morning, look out over valley and see nothing man made at all. La Loutre is part of a small hamlet, but set away from the other houses so it feels lovely and remote.

If you keep your eyes open you're likely to see otters from the dining room window.

There is off-road parking, which is great, but it's a tight squeeze and on a corner of the road so getting the car in is difficult the first few times. There is a lay-by just down the road, and it's definitely worth stopping there and taking a look at the road before taking the car in for the first time.

I'd definitely recommend the cottage for a group of adults, or a family with older children. Young children would have to be kept under permanent supervision though as the cottage literally overhangs a very steep drop down to the river.

There was a healthy collection of guides, leaflets, etc. for the local area, which was very welcome.
