‘Les Bazandes’ – elegant riverside house with own pool

Set deep in the heart of SW France and surrounded by the stunning medieval towns of Cordes sur Ciel, Najac, Albi, St. Antonin and Villefranche de Rouergue, ‘Les Bazandes’ is ideal for couples or families looking for a relaxing break away from the crowds. Here you can explore the local history, countryside and culture, dine on the terrace overlooking flower-filled gardens and our very own waterfall (‘la belle cascade’, formed by the river Cérou), relax in the garden, take a dip in our newly installed 4.3m wide plunge-pool or read a book and listen to the sound of running water. Inside, all rooms have tall ceilings and windows, making the house bright, cheerful and spacious. The house itself is comfortably furnished with a mix of antique and modern furniture, local bric-a-brac and blue and white china. In addition, the attractive kitchen is well equipped and includes a dishwasher and microwave oven. Mid-week changeovers a possibility for cheaper flights. Oil and wood heating.

You can also cycle along one of the prettiest (and flattest) parts of the 2003 Tour de France as it literally passed by our house - Lance Armstrong’s name is still painted on the tarmac! Due to the height of the dining terrace and the proximity of the river, we do not recommend this house to families with young (and unsupervised) children. However, a cot and highchair are available if needed. Wood burner and central heating foe Autumn/Winter lets.

Getting here and away

Pointe à Pitre and Cordes sur Ciel are about a day's drive (10-11 hrs) from Calais or just one hour from Toulouse International airport where there are several flights per day from Gatwick, Luton and Heathrow. In addition, there are daily flights to Rodez and Carcassonne with Ryanair. On a wider perspective, the location is central to the Pyrénées, the Mediterranean and Atlantic coasts, all of which make for an interesting day away. For more local information, please contact us for our brochure and website address.

History and wine

This area of the Tarn is renowned for its many “bastide'' towns and villages. Of these, Cordes sur Ciel is perhaps the best known, and a wonderful example of a living medieval, hill-top fortification. Dating from 1222, the town was founded by Raymond, Count of Toulouse during the violent years of the Cathar Wars and Albigensian Crusades. Today, the walls and houses of Cordes sur Ciel stand in their entirety, having been painstakingly restored by the artisans and artists who now live and work there. Wine connoisseurs can investigate the local vineyards of Gaillac (starting 10 minutes to the south) and Cahors (1 hour to the north), Languedoc (2 hours to the south) or the relatively unknown Marcillac to the northeast near Rodez. Cordes sur Ciel and its environs is also home to many restaurateurs who can guide you on your choice of good wine.

Eating, drinking and entertainment

In addition to history, Cordes sur Ciel has all the shops and services necessary to sustain daily life (small supermarket, tabac, newsagent, bank, post office, boulangerie/patisserie, boucherie and several bar/restaurants). The lovely towns of Najac and St Antonin Noble Val are also only 20 minutes away. Both have very colourful markets on Sunday. There are several fêtes, spectacles, music festivals and general entertainments taking place in Cordes sur Ciel and the surrounding villages every summer. Family entertainment is available 20 minutes away at the Cap Découverte theme park including swimming pool, karting, dry-slope skiing and tobogganing, skating, rollerblading, cycling and a museum of the old mines and local history. In addition, the Le Garissou open-air swimming pool and water-slide is only 5 minutes away in Les Cabannes. Cinemas, showing original-language films, are available at Gaillac and St Antonin.
