Bareges and the Domaine du Tourmalet has the largest ski area in the Pyrenees. Bareges is a delightful Napoleonic village situated at the heart of the central Pyrenees in an area of great natural beauty unspoiled by the passage of time, and offers the perfect base for exploring. The valley is the entry point into the Pyrenees National Park and the Neouvielle Nature Reserve and contains many exceptional sites including the magnificent Cirque de Gavarnie (a UNESCO World Heritage Site), and the mythical Col du Tourmalet. Over the centuries the the local countryside inspired many famous writers including Victor Hugo and George Sand. It is also here that the golden age of Pyrenean exploration started. The seventeen picturesque villages of the Pays Toy (the local area) cling resolutely to the mountainsides, each with their own particular character and local heritage of C12th churches, ancient streets and monuments.

We stayed in Helios 107 last year and 106 this time. Both apartments were very clean and kitted out with all you could wish for.
Peter and Jude, the owners, live locally and are able to answer every query plus they make every effort to make your stay as hassle free as possible.
Peter collected us from the airport at Pau and Jude welcomed us at the apartment. They organised ski passes for us and advised ski hire and ski school that we were coming and we got special rates.
Bareges is a completely unspoilt village with butcher, baker, small Spar type shop and some excellent bars and restaurants.
The village boasts a thermal spa which is being completely refurbished and updated and will be great once it's finished. I was only able to use a part of it, however it's due to be finished at the end of February 2009.
My husband and son have enjoyed excellent skiing this year. All the runs were open, the snow was superb and it was never horrendously busy.
I was able to go on some walks even though there was lots of snow and best of all the sun shone every day. I also took a local bus down the valley to Luz St Saviour where I visited their thermal baths.
Peter and Jude have put together a brilliant info folder that gives lots of ideas on how to pass your time whilst staying in their apartments during both winter and summer seasons. Their website has lots more information too.
