Quiet mountain house with nice view: 'La Grange de Gustou'

LA GRANGE DE GUSTOU is a restored stone barn situated at 3000ft elevation on a South facing hill between forest and pastureland, enjoying a superb panoramic view toward the high Pyrenean peaks as well as the Garbet river valley and the village of Erce below. The interior of the house has been renovated for maximum comfort: a terrace and veranda have been added to the original building so as to be able to admire the view any time of day or season. Total peace is assured. Surrounding the house you can enjoy 40 acres of private land with forest and meadows. There are no neighbors or noise other than the sounds of cow bells and the falling water from a nearby torrent.

The sunlit meadows and cool forests of Haut-Couserans are home to a rich palette of wildlife and plants. Nestled in scenic valleys, the many quaint villages will charm you with their unique atmosphere and ancient stonework. The house is a one and a half hour drive from Toulouse passing through the cities of Saint Girons,Oust and Erce. A big veranda is connected to the living room. It is the best place in the house. In all seasons you will enjoy the view at both the highest peak and the Garbet valley in below. Outside the house you will like the natural spring water and the sound of the falling water in a nearby torrent. in a fresh and sunny location. Surrounding the house forest and meadows with horses and cows.

HISTORY:

The previous owner was nicknamed 'Gustou'. He was used to bring his cows up to the fertile pastures on terraced land nearby the barn for the summer. The barn was located on a rocky promontory as at that time hay or dung was carried by men and it was easier to bring hay up the slope and dung down the slope. Nowadays Merens horses have replaced the cows on the summer pastures, but the newly restored barn constructed of granite wood and slate has retained its original aspect.

SHOPPING AND RESTAURANTS

At Erce village(about 2 km from the house) you will find a cafe- restaurant and a small grocery store with all basic food. All kind of stores are available at Oust (8 kms) and big supermarkets at Saint Girons (20 Kms). Many restaurants are available in the surrounding villages.

Skiing Information:

Guzet Ski station can be seen from the gite. It is at 14 kms at an altitude of 1400 meters (Pelioou is at 1000 m.). Season usually starts in December and finishes end of March. For more information, please contact us for web site details. In the heart of pine forest, the ski resort of Guzet awaits you. The network of snow-guns has been newly extended for a guarantee of abundant snow the whole season long. This resort offers a wide range of skiing pleasures with its snow park, entertainment, and shops. Unlike bigger station Guzet is never crowded and you will not spend your time queuing.

An amazing week in a beautiful house and a fantastic part of France. This was my first visit to the south of France and the Pyrenees but will certainly not be my last. I am very impressed with the incredible scenery and the tranquility. We 've enjoyed some truly spectacular walks in the montains - cheating. I am tempted to try the skiing here one year. We all have had a truly wonderful time here. We stayed at Souleilo last year, thought that was excellent but this new gite is five star. As wrote last year we shall be back.
