Photos and Description of this Berville sur Mer holiday cottage
Self-catering cottage in rural Normandy for a romantic or family holiday

This pretty cottage, with original exposed beams, is part of a traditional 16th century stable building. Reputedly the longest thatched building in Normandy, it has been converted into self-contained gites. It is set in 2 hectares of tranquil natural gardens, surrounded by fields, only a quarter of a mile from the River Seine and on the edge of the Brotonne National Park. It is 10 km miles from the historic port of Honfleur and less than 30 minutes from the wide golden beaches of Trouville and Deauville. An ideal base for walking, cycling, golf, fishing, canoeing and exploring the historical and gastronomic wonders of Calvados, cider and Camembert country.

Berville-sur-Mer is a small rural hamlet which is 30 minutes from Le Havre, 2 hours from Paris and three hours by auto-route from Calais and Boulogne. It is about half a kilometre from the River Seine and local fishing. The gite is 10 km from Honfleur, a favourite with Impressionist painters, with a picturesque harbour, 16th century wooden church, fine restaurants, galleries, art museum, fish market and Saturday market. It is about 30 minutes' drive from stylish Deauville, famous for its wide sandy beaches, racecourse, golf courses, casino and film festival. Nearby Trouville beaches are more family-oriented. Further along the Côte Fleurie are the D-Day landing beaches, with the D-Day Museum at Arromanches and the Pegasus Bridge. Monet’s gardens at Giverny, the stunning Bayeux Tapestry and the cathedral city of Rouen make wonderful day trips, particularly in quieter months.

Further details for this holiday cottage rental in Berville sur Mer , France

The region: Berville is a small rural hamlet close to the River Seine about 10 km from the beautiful harbour town of Honfleur. There is a small shop and bar selling basics, including bread and milk. The nearest supermarket is in Contéville, about 3 km away, and there is a large hypermarket and supermarkets on the outskirts of Honfleur. Normandy is a land of fishermen and farmers and is one of the finest gastronomic regions of France. Fish dishes are a regional speciality, with imposing ranges of fruits de mer served at waterside restaurants in Honfleur and in neighbouring villages.

Honfleur has an excellent fish market and, every Saturday morning, there is also a superb farmers’ market by the church of Sainte Cathérine and a clothes market near the harbour. There are country markets on most days in the region and numerous shops selling cider, Calvados and the world-famous locally-produced cheeses, Camembert, Pont l’Eveque and Liverot.

The village is on the edge of the Brotonne National Park, with walking and cycling routes and picturesque villages and markets. Golfers will find excellent golf courses within easy reach and the region is popular with fishermen. A wide range of other leisure facilities are available locally, including swimming, fishing, canoeing and horse-riding.

A short drive will take you to the coastal towns of Trouville and elegant Deauville, famous for its racecourse, casino, golf courses, film festival and vast golden beaches. The D-Day Normandy landings, the artificial port (Port Winston) and Second World War battlefields are commemorated in the excellent museum at Arromanches. There is also a ‘peace’ museum in Caen, with its beautiful Romanesque church and ruins of an enormous castle founded by William the Conqueror. Beyond lies the Cathedral of Bayeux and the stunning 70-metre tapestry recording the Norman invasion of England in 1066, and the great island monastery of Mont St Michel.

There are many museums and historical monuments in Normandy, including a museum at Fécamp which offers a tour of the only distillery to produce the famous Benedictine liqueur.

Other Activities:

Public golf course within 30 minutes drive

August in Normandy

Review Submitted: January 8, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2008
This is one of the most well appointed gites we have ever stayed in. The bed is large and comfortable with good quality bedlinen, the towels in the bathroom are soft and fluffy, the kitchen is extremely well equipped and the cottage is very tastefully furnished throughout. Everything about the property says 'quality'. The location is perfect, with an enormous tranquil shared garden and the Seine just a two minute walk away. Also just a short walk away is the hamlet and its good deli/general store and bar.

We were so sorry that the cottage is booked in 2009 for the week we wanted, as it's the place that we would return to again and again.

Thanks for a great holiday - Jacquie and Terry
