Delightful 250 year old stone cottage in rural Normandy

250 year old cottage in the heart of the Normandy countryside near Bagnoles de L'Orne. The stone built cottage which dates from the 1750s and has a wealth of traditional features, including massive oak beams and an enormous granite fireplace. It has terracotta floors downstairs, and attractive wooden floorboards upstairs. Situated in La Serriere, a hamlet lying in a cul de sac - no passing traffic - about one mile from the village of La Sauvagere, which is 5 miles from the spa town of Bagnoles de l'Orne, and 50 miles from Caen. This well-equipped cottage has oak beams, traditional features, central heating and enclosed south-facing garden. It has a large living room with wood burning stove, dining room, kitchen and bathroom downstairs. The kitchen has a gas hob, microwave, oven/grill, fridge/freezer, dishwasher and washing machine. TV, video, CD and DVD players. Large mezzanine upstairs as well as 1 double bedroom and 1 twin bedroom (separate bedrooms). Z- bed on request.

The gite lies in the Normandy Maine Regional Park, and is notable for its forests and bocage countryside - small fields, woods, hedgerows and orchards. Less than three miles from the house is the enormous Forest d'Andaines, which stretches for over ten miles and is full of wildlife including red squirrels and red deer. There are miles of walks and forest tracks, ideal for cycling. The nearby Orne and Mayenne rivers provide plenty of fishing and canoeing opportunities. D-Day beaches, Bayeux and Mont St. Michel all within an easy 2 hour drive. Close to Bagnoles de l'Orne, which has many restaurants and cafes, as well as a boating lake, lido swimming pool, tennis courts, casino and cinema. Many local markets. Easy access to Paris, which is 2 hours by train. Local bathing lake with sandy beach 5 minutes drive, and indoor swimming pool with flume only 10 minutes drive.

The Village The gite lies in the hamlet of La Serriere, which has only 16 houses and is in a cul de sac - no through traffic ! The village has a small dairy farm, about 80 yards from the house, and is surrounded by fields and woods - 'bocage' country. There are walks from the house. The nearest village with facilities is La Sauvagere, which is less than one mile away. It has a boulangerie, bar tabac, cafe/restaurant , and post office. It also has tennis courts. Local Towns

The nearest towns are Briouze, La Ferte Mace and Bagnoles de l'Orne. Briouze (8 kms) is a small typical Norman town with a reasonable range of shops, lively market on Mondays and mainline rail service to Paris. La Ferte Mace (5kms) is the main local town with a wide range of shops and hypermarket. It has a large market on Thursdays, with covered food market. The town has a leisure complex on the nearby lake with beaches, sailing and pedalos, fishing, golf and walks. Bagnoles (8kms) is a lively tourist town with specialist shops, hotels, cafes, cinema, casino and a weekly market. It is best known for its health spas and has an attractive lake with pedalos. There are excellent sports facilities including a heated lido and tennis courts, both indoor and outdoor, and nine hole golf course. Domfront (20kms) is a medieval town perched on a rock outcrop. Flers (20kms) - has an excellent indoor swimming pool at Flers, which has a water chute and outside pool in the summer.

Attractions of the region

The Normandy countryside is very attractive with many walks and cycle trails. A number of long distance Grand Randonee routes pass through the area. Within easy travelling distance by car: Normandy Beaches - 1 hour 15 - D-day beaches are 50 miles away, including the Mulberry Harbour at Arromanche. The beaches are long, golden and sandy. Suisse Normand Countryside - 20 minutes - An area of hills, gorges and rivers popular with walkers, fishermen, climbers and canoeists. Caen - 1 hour - Wonderful range of shops and museums. The Abbeys inlcude the burial place of William the Conqueror. Falaise - 30 minutes - Medieval castle which was the birthplace of William the Conqueror Le Mans - 1 hour 20 - Large,lively city with famous cathedral and racing circuit. Mont St.Michel - 1 hour 15 - Fantastic monastery - world heritage site. Food & Drink - many restaurants within a few minutes- everything from Menu du Jour for 10 euros up to a one star Michelin restaurant
