Normandy is rural France at its most civilised; a green and pleasant land that offers the serenest of holidays. The departments of Calvados and Orne form the heart of ‘Basse-Normandie’ and it is on the border, between the villages of Crocy and Trun, where you will find Le Moulin de Mandeville. Le Moulin is a detached c18th century stone built mill house which has been recently renovated to provide a high standard of accommodation. Eight acres of grounds with river nearby ensure peace and tranquillity so typical of this part of Normandy. Le Moulin is ideally located as a base for exploring one of the most beautiful and varied regions of France. The Normandy beaches and Camembert are within easy reach, Monet's garden and Paris not too far distant. Le Moulin loves people - a lovely family home but we often use it for just us two; we never wish for more.

Details: As you cross our private river over the (deliberately rickety to repel boarders!) bridge you enter upon the island that is Le Moulin de Mandeville, an island that has been the second home of our family for about sixteen years. Originally a working mill serving Merri and communities beyond, conversion of the property into a private residence started in 1989; now the work is complete. The nearest shops, bank and public telephone are in Trun, about 4km to the South. The (Shopi) supermarket is excellent; three bakers and two butchers ensure competition is rife and provisions of good quality. The market is on Thursday. Many other shops, amenities (including a swimming pool and a museum) and places of interest can be found in Falaise, 12 km to the north.

Booking Your Holiday: To ensure your chosen dates it is advisable to book well in advance. At the same time it is essential to book your ferry crossing. Of the many choices the Portsmouth-Caen crossing (Brittany Ferries) is the most convenient being about 50 minutes by car from the Mill. Portsmouth-Le Havre (MD Lines) and Portsmouth- Cherbourg (Brittany Ferries) are each about 90 minutes distant. Ferries also run from Poole to Cherbourg (Brittany Ferries). The Channel Tunnel is about 2 hours drive away.

Le Moulin is everything and more that could be expected. We had a wondeful two week family holiday, time enough to visit Disneyland in Paris, the beaches on the Normandy coast, Swiss Normandy for rock climbing and horse riding, and not forgetting Calvados country. Always to return to Le Moulin was a treat in store - the games room, sitting by the river or walking the bounds - just to be there was really quite enough. Eric & Jane Legat, Salisbury, Wiltshire, GB

The house suited us perfectly. Our party included my wife and myself, my daughter, her husband and their two daughters and my son and his girlfriend. There were three bathrooms which ment each part of the family had their own facilities.There was a well equiped games room with a pool table and many board games. The house was spaceous and very well furnished. The only downside was the power account, it actually cost me 57 euro for power used over and above the weeks allowance,which was a surprise as we were out every day and my wife and myself spent the last two days there by ourselves.
