Further details for this holiday barn rental in Seine-Maritime, France

The forest: The forest D'Eauwy (dayvee) is Europe's largest natural beech forest with a network of cycle paths and riding tracks throughout. It is home to many easily spotted species of woodland animals, flora and fauna. There is a recently discovered WW2, V1 rocket site complete with (diffused) rocket on its launching pad. There are too many activities in the area to mention, but golf, riding, cycling, walking, carp fishing, tree adventure parks and body\kite\ wind surfing are just a few.

The Coast: The coastline from Dieppe towards Le Havre is an unspoilt stretch of small villages and beaches, some sandy and some pebbled, forty minutes drive away. All the villages have excellent very reasonably priced restaurants, oyster bars and usually some stalls where fish from the day's catch are sold. The area is untouched by mass tourism and pretty well remains the same as it has been for decades. The beaches are all blue flagged (clean beaches) manned by the pompiers (fire service) for lifeguard duties. This is a popular spot for kite surfers in the spring and Autumn. Further South past the massive pont Normandie are the more sophisticated seaside towns of Honfleur(an hour's drive)and Deauville. The D-day landing beaches are a two hour drive away down the A29 motorway (4 km from the house). We can suggest an itinerary if you wish to visit them.

History, Culture and gardens.: The city of Rouen with its medieval quarter of small antique and fashion boutiques, restaurants, beautiful churches and Cathedral is a twenty minute drive away. The area is famous for it's many chateaux, historical houses and gardens which you could spend a week visiting there are so many, we can suggest a few prime spots if you are interested.

Other Activities: Table tennis, volleyball/badminton net, 12m by 6m covered heated pool available from April to October.

Undiscovered Normandy

Review Submitted: May 11, 2009 Date of Stay: May 2009
Having just returned from my trip, I can say that I'm truly refreshed. The accommodation is cosey and welcoming, well presented having only recently been refurbished and with a sizeable oven and hob for those inspired to cook by the fresh produce available locally.

The table tennis table and swimming pool ensured excess energy from the calories from the barbecue provided were burned off, and the location on a farm provided the children with the opportunity to see cattle and horses at close quarters. And to play on the lawn in full view.

Saint Saens is a charming village set around the main square, but a short walk down the side streets reveals a picturesque tranquill village with many pretty traditional houses and a small river which runs through the town and along the valley beyond.

Nearby is the V1 rocket launch base from WW2 which was a real surprise and an insight into quite what a feet of engineering these terrifying weapons were. Dieppe is a short drive away and has similar stories to tell of the disaterous 1942 raid.

For those more interested in the present there is a wealth of beautiful countryside to be explored and a number of high quality well priced restaurants in the surrounding villages and a lovely family run restaurant on the main square of Saint Saens itself. There are excellent oppotunities to buy quality local produce from the bakers, patisserie, butchers and local green grocers around the square, backed up by a well stocked "Champion" supermarket which has almost everything you might want.

The owners are friendly and hospitable. All in all this is a beautiful country getaway that should also satisfy townies looking for quiet, with the covenience of good produce and quality restaurants close at hand, subject however to "French opening hours"! The area does not have the feel of being over run by tourists although it has a great deal to offer, whilst in comfortable striking distance of Eurotunnel and the Ferry.
Owner's Response: Here are a few other ideas;

The Benedictine distillery at Fecamp with it's quirky Gothic architecture and museum perhaps after a go on the high zip wires at the tree adventure park on the way. (Rated by a serving soldier as 'challenging').

A visit to Cleres zoological park where most of the animals roam free, then a trip to nearby Bocasse amusement park for younger children.

Spend a day on the sandy beach at St Aubin sur Mer with some body surfing (check tide tables to catch it on the turn from low to high), meander back towards Dieppe and pick up some fresh fish from the boats, drop into the Oyster bar at Pourville for a crisp white wine and oysters while the children buy 'frites' and play on the beach. See the garden at Chateau Miromesnil on the way back home.

See the V1 rocket pointed towards London and the V1 headquarters at Chateau de Bosmelet with its award winning (Chelsea) garden (when open). Having given your visit to the beaches of the D-day landings context, see the 360 panorama film at Arromanches of footage shot on the day, tie it in with the Bayeux tapestry of the invasion going the other way!

Plan an itinerary of gardens with lunch somewhere good, maybe dinner too.

Take to the river in a canoe at Auffay, go horseback riding in the forest from the St Saens stables.

Choose from many highly rated and tested golf courses within 45 minutes derive.
