Out and About Locally
There is much to do and to see in the immediate area for both young and more mature visitors. The countryside is very picturesque and the coast line of the Cote d'Albatre is rugged and stunningly beautiful. It is a pleasure just to walk or to cycle around the lanes. Pebble and sandy bays, small fishing villages, market towns and fishing ports are interspersed along the dramatic chalky cliffs. These chalk cliffs have provided much material for painters both professional and amateur. This region was famous during the turn of the 19th century when the Impressionist movement in Paris was strong and famous artists such as Monet, Pisarro and Renoir came to paint. For those with an interest in history and, in particular, WWII there are endless sites, memorial and museums. The department is indelibly marked by the momentous events of 1944, and the ensuing months leading to the eventual liberation of France and the rest of Europe.
Festivals and Fetes
The Spring, Summer and Autumn months feature regular festivals celebrating all sorts of produce, saints and, in fact, just about anything that can be celebrated. There is a Watercress Festival, the Herring Festival, the Festival of the Sea and the Festival of bread to name but a few. There are fairs, circuses and carnivals, horse shows, dog shows and flower shows. There are markets galore. There is barley a weekend without local entertainment.
Sites of Interest
The port and yacht marina of Saint Valery-en-Caux is charming and lovely place just to wander around and take in the atmosphere. Lunch by the harbour is an excellent way to pass a few hours! Close by is the quaint seaside town of veules-les-Roses which boasts France's shortest river. This has a good beach front with excellent facilities for young children. Dieppe provides more variety and has an interesting history dating back to the Ivory importing era. Rouen is Normandy's capital city and is know as the City of Bells and is more famous for its links to Joan of Arc. Normandy offers so much - the D-Day landing beaches and their various museums, the Bayeux tapestry, Mont Saint Michel, Monet's Garden at Giverney and the cider/cheese producing regions.
Golf Information:
The closest course is at Dieppe which is just 15 minutes by car. It is a very friendly and pretty course featuring German bunkers and splendid views over the cliffs towards the sea. Within a 50 kilometre radius there are about 5 other courses, one of which is included in France's top 10. This is the links course at Etratat which has absolutely fantastic coastal views. We have had golfing groups to stay and they have found Les Cerisiers to be an ideal location.
