La Cote Fleurie (The flower coast) in the county of Calvados is a most convenient spot for summer holidays with plentiful beaches and a pleasant climate, as well a perfect starting point for visiting historic spots and cultural events year-round. Our house is recently built (1999) in the historic port of Dives Sur Mer, where William the Conqueror set up his fleet in 1066 before sailing along the coast and over to Hastings and the decisive battle. Dives Sur Mer has in more recent history been an industrial town, and on grounds along the estuary of the Dives river was build the factory of Trefimetaux in 1890. The factory had more than 1200 employees in 1965, but was closed in 1985 due to fierce competition in production of piping. It was decided to build a major holiday resort, and in 1991 the new harbour was opened as well as the first apartments. In 2005 the building around the harbour was finalised. Our house is semidetached connected with another house by a garden/cycle shed.

The house is in the holiday resort “Port Guillaume” by the quiet village of Dives Sur Mer, built up around the new port at the estuary of the river Dives. Dives Sur Mer is situated between the villages Houlgate and Cabourg, and it is at a leisurely walking distance from all 3 village centres. There are a large number of restaurants from the quite exclusive “Balbec” at the Grand Hotel in Cabourg to the modest but still quality at “Le Mora” in Dives Sur Mer old harbour. The property is easily accessible by car, train and air. There are regular flights to Caen from Manchester, and summer flights to Deauville. Nearest major airport is Paris CDG. There is a railway station a short walk from the house served on regular basis 2,5 hours from Paris throughout summer. Ferry services to Ouistreham (25 min) and Le Havre (55 min). You are 30 minutes from the D-day landing beaches, and 15 minutes from the nearest airborne landing zone. The historic city of Caen (25 km) have some good shopping.

Notes: The pool is private in the 'Copropriété', shared with a limited number of other privately owned homes. The pool is situated in the fenced in garden of an apartment mansion, and the entrance is with a code trough the reception of the mansion.

Summer activities: The house is situated at the river bank, and the view and the activity is constantly changing with the tide. 120 meters upstream there is pedestrian bridge over to the sand dunes and the beach, less than 5 minutes walk. On the beaches and in the sea there is a lot of windsurfing, kite-flying, fishing and sand sailing. In the harbour there is a yacht club and a sailing school. Within a 10 minutes drive there are 3 golf courses, from the hilly one in Houlgate to the sandy one in Cabourg. Horse riding and tennis is available in Houlgate, Dives and Cabourg, and in Cabourg there is speedy track for go carting. Hiking, tennis, riding and cycling is plentiful.

Golfing: There are 3 golf courses within 3 km from our house. The golf in Home is close to the beach and quite sandy. The municipal golf in Cabourg is quite flat, and an affordable price. The golf at Houlgate is set around the Chateau de Beuzeville. This course is quite demanding and hilly, in a beautiful landscape with the view to the sea. Further there are 5 golf courses less than 20 minutes (more in holiday season) driving from our house, Caen, Trouville, Honfleur ...

The cottage was ideally situated for exploring the area; a vey short walk from the marina at Port Guillaume (which had three restaurants, a take-away pizzeria, a fish-mongers; and a boulangerie) and the beach at Cabourg (which is very clean, wide and long). The main town of Dives-sur-Mer is a 5-10 minute walk away, Carbourg is 15 - 20 minues walk; and Houlgate 20-30 munites (depending on how fast you walk). There is, therefore, no absolute requrement to drive anywhere - each town has a local market on different days of the week, so local fresh produce can be obtained without the need to visit a supermarket; although there are two on the edge of Dives.

As there are two train stations in Dives, this resort can be reached by train; although a car is highly recommended.

The house is compact, and well stocked with kitchen equipment and crockery and cutlery. There is, though, not much storage space in the bedrooms.
