Set in the heart of a conservation area of significant importance we are in the beautiful and stunning Parc Naturel Cotentin et du Bessin on UTAH BEACH. On one side of us to the right there is a bird sanctuary 500 yards from the house, on the left side 500 yards away is the memorial and museum for Utah Beach. Our local village Ste Marie du Mont was the first village in France to be liberated on June 6th 1944. Band of Brothers was filmed around here for parts 2 & 3. The 82nd & 101st airbourne troops parachuted into the area with St Mere Eglise just 6 miles away. Further up the coast the other invasion beaches are all easy access and well worth a visit. The museums, memorials and information are superb with films in most museums, all of them are really worth visiting...we highly recommend the 360 degree cinema at Arromanches. There is so much to do here, not just the invasion beaches....most folk have to come back for a 2nd visit, 3rd...
Local activities diving, surfing, swimming, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing, water skiing, paragliding

| Notes: | The house on 2 floors has a large ramp to the side outside, it is feasible for wheelchair access...however, note we do NOT have disabled toilet facilities. The house is suitable for elderly. The washing machine & tumble drier are in the laundry room on the lower ground floor. Well behaved dogs are positively welcomed, we have an excellent vet very au fait with passports for pets. The beach is safe and clean - however it is naturally, necessary, to supervise children swimming, as the currents can be strong when the tide is coming in. NEW for 2007 - Horse Riding From the house. As we are right on the beach we have now linked up with Irish owned stables here in Normandy - they will come to you... insurance etc all included. It is literally get on your horse for a ride on the beach. The stables have horses suitable for most riders - but please discuss with us in advance your level of competence so they can bring the right horses in the horse boxes! |
Natural Park
Our beach fronted house is set in Cotentin and Bessin Marshlands Regional Natural Park which covers 145,000 hectare with 144 villages and towns within the Park.. Utah Beach is located on the eastern side of the peninsular is set in a significantly important coastal protected area of 12,000 acres with the Beauguillot Nature Reserve/Bird Sanctuary of 1,200 acres 500 meters from our house. The area is in stunning countryside and completely different each season. For example in the winter the marshlands flood to create a beautiful watery scenery with the big skies reflected, then in the summer it becomes pasture with cows peacefully grazing. The East coast being slightly wilder than the west coast is very unspoilt especially with the government owning vast tracts of the coast line to preserve the natural beauty. This area in Normandy is also famous for it’s horses with numerous stud farms and training stables. Here on Utah Beach Trotting Horses are trained everyday on the beach.
Lots to do and see
There is something for everyone, bird watchers, beach lovers, gourmets, wine lovers, walkers, bike riders, horse riders, wind surfers, sand yachters, sailing, diving, horse racing, interest in the 2nd world war or just generally exploring…the problem here is that there is too much to do! Yet in the summer the beach is paradise, miles and miles of golden sands a perfect spot for a peaceful read, a sun bathe or a busy day with the family on the beach, beach combing, shell fish gathering when the tide is out, it's safe to swim and it's not crowded. .With the bird sanctuary just a few hundred meters away we enjoy an amazing number of different species of sea birds and ducks. If it is particularly quiet on the beach you may be able to spot the colony of seals. Huge mussels and oysters beds right opposite our house destined for the finest restaurants and tables in Paris and other gourmet destinations – it is possible to purchase shellfish direct from the farm shops locally.
Home from home...
bedding, towels & beach towels are available. Sun bed covers there may even be a bucket and spade for the kids! The house is on the beach – the other houses around are mainly holiday homes so are only opened up 2 weeks of the year – it is an incredibly tranquil and peaceful spot, but not completely isolated. The museum attracts in excess of 360,000 visitors per year with our house tucked up in the dunes you won’t be aware of any activity at all! Near the museum is Café Roosevelt, which is an Internet café. Half way between Utah Beach and Ste Marie du Mont is a former farm that has been converted into an equestrian centre with hotel and a fabulous restaurant. The nearest village 4 kms away, Saint Marie du Mont which has the most beautiful church, boulangeries, mini mart, bars and restaurants. Ste Mere Eglise 8kms, Bayeux & Caen 45 minutes away. We positively welcome dogs.
Other Activities Bird watching, dolphin & seal watching, boat trips round the invasion beaches, sand yachting, para wind surfing, beach combing
