La Chapelle d'Abondance:
Originally a farming community La Chapelle has developed as a popular resort for family holidays. With its own links into the Portes du Soleil ski and mountain bike circuits it has nevertheless retained its village atmosphere and is a centre for x-country skiing. Quality restaurants abound and there is even a micro-brewery adding to its appeal.
The pleasures of this valley are often greater out of the main holiday season. The most beautiful flowers and the quietest pistes and walks are available. Local festivals provide colour and interest and it is less expensive to get here and stay here.
Winter Sports:
The Portes du Soleil is one of the world's largest ski areas. Based in La Chapelle access to several different starting points is possible, giving a wide variety of choice and the possibility to avoid busier pistes. If that were not enough many major resorts are within 1 1/2 hours drive - Verbier, Crans Montana, Flaine, Argentiere, Villars. For beginners the village ski bus passes the door but a car is recommended to enjoy the full facilities.
There is a major investment program for new lifts and snow making equipment and there are numerous new snow parks for the adventurous.
Summer Activities:
Mountain holidays have a surprising range of activities for all ages and inclinations. Walking and Mountain biking are featured but it is easy to relax with many accessible health spas, wonderful restaurants and a beautiful countryside. The climate of course is less predictable than in beach resorts but walking by one of the many nearby lakes you might think you were on the riviera. Diving, golf, tennis, rock climbing on La Chapelle's Via Ferrata, or white water rafting may take your fancy and there are numerous summer festivals to introduce you to the local food, wine and customs. In 2009 a new scheme will give access to all the swimming, tennis, museums, local buses and pedestrian skilifts for only €1 a day.
Ski:
The Portes du Soleil is a group of linked villages in France and Switzerland served by 195 lifts with 650 kilometres of pistes of all levels and 10 snow parks. The ski season runs from mid December to the end of April with snow conditions that have matched many higher resorts in recent years. Our location between Chatel and La Chapelle d'Abondance allows access to the ski network from a number of different lifts, by car or by ski bus. The ski schools of both villages can be reached easily. Our properties are situated 100 metres from the largest cross-country ski network in the area and we can suggest raquette walks direct from the chalets. Ski buses to the skilifts in La Chapelle d'Abondance and Chatel stop close by.
