Royan only 16km, La Rochelle (65 km): Our nearest ‘airport’ town. In the town, the unusual arcaded streets make for great leisurely shopping, with everything from antiques to high fashion on offer. A few kilometres further north is the very fashionable Ile de Ré.
Royan (16 km): Is a lively, modern, resort, with its sandy beaches, large marina, daily market, shops and restaurants. The beaches of Royan, Châtelaillon-Plage and Saint Georges de Didonne are clean, expansive and pretty and are ideal for family relaxation.
Rochefort (30 km): Has a rope manufacturing museum and former military arsenal, the Corderie Royale, and also an ambitious reconstruction of the 18th-century frigate, Hermione.
Saintes (26 km): This beautiful Roman town with its Arch Germanicus, amphitheatre, cathedral and abbey is a ‘must’ for many tourists.
Along the coast there are many pretty villages to explore. Talmont, with its cliffside 13th-century church and the ports of Mortagne and Mornac.
