The popular village of Nans-sous-Ste.Anne, 25 miles south of the city of Besancon, is tucked away in a sparsely populated, but densely forested area noted for dairy cattle, horse-breeding, cheese and wine.
It attracts older visitors for its tranquillity, Michelin 2-star sights, cuisine, gentle exercise, and motoring. Younger visitors enjoy walking, caving, climbing, mountain-biking, fishing, horse-riding and canoeing from the village. 15 mins away are para-gliding, swimming, tennis etc, as are nearest supermarkets and other facilities. There is plenty, too, to amuse younger children.
Village sights include the spectacular gorge whence the River Lison cascades fully-formed and a working early 19C water-driven farm-tools factory.
There is a restaurant and a dairy shop offering its own cheeses as well as wine from the nearby (Arbois/Cotes du Jura) vineyards.
Within a day's easy motoring Switzerland is 45 minutes away; Burgundy one hour; Alsace and Germany 2 hours; Italy 3½ hours.
