Photos and Description of this Jura holiday apartment Self-catering - Patio/garden. Quiet farming location.

Our fully restored and converted split level barn is in the department of Jura in the Franche-Comté, next to the Swiss border. It's a refreshingly green region with 49% given over to forest. The apartment style is light and airy, a mixture of original features blended tastefully into practical living accommodation, with exposed beams and large windows offering wonderful views of the surrounding hilly countryside and trees. It has its own patio/garden. Sitting centrally in just over a quarter of an acre the barn is full of character, and typical of its type and age, built into a hillside with the wide sloping roof at the rear practically touching the ground! So while the apartment is reached via a private staircaset, it benefits from glass doors (at the rear) leading to its own private, sunny patio and small garden area! Located in a peaceful small farming hamlet half way up a hill, our Old Stone Barn is just the place to shake off the hassle and stress of a busy life.

We are located in a quiet hamlet half way up a winding hill. The general area is very rural with lots of small dairy farmers, the cows, wearing typical Comté cowbells, are to be seen (and heard) grazing the fields in summer. The countryside is hilly with acres of forests, and whichever direction you travel, the views are consistently pretty. There are many things to do and see including many natural beauty sites. We are about 5 kilometres from the spa village of Salins les Bains, which is a listed Franche-Comté town (village by English standards!), nestled in the valley known as “Nature Valley”. Salins has all the necessary facilities and also an old salt mine (that you can visit) and of course the spa where besides beauty treatments you can enjoy the luxury pool with jacuzzi. We have a selection of Swiss border crossings well within an hour from here and Geneva is just 100k

Further details for this holiday apartment rental in Jura, France

So much to see and do .............: This area really is rather special, in as much as, it truly does have something for everyone! We are in the ”Golden Triangle”, so called for the wealth of natural beauty and the assured warm welcome from locals. We are spoilt for choice, from cultural visits to adventure parks to kayaking to embarking on one of the interesting “discovery trails” the list and choice of activities is endless. Perfect picnic spots are plentiful with ample opportunity for river swimming and walking or hiking, as your mood takes you. For day trips there’s “Jura National Park” that stretches for miles along the Swiss border. When we first came to live here I was amazed at the diverse range of things to do, visit and participate in. So amazed in fact, that I created a little guidebook for visiting friends and family – needless to say the “little” guidebook soon became a “thick” guidebook. As you skim through it I’m sure you’ll agree with the title I finally gave it “A Week’s Not Long Enough”!

Why not a winter break? ...............: Of course summer is, beyond doubt, a beautiful time of year here, with the green meadows, cows grazing and the smell of freshly cut hay wafting in the warm summer breeze. But wintertime in our little hamlet is also a haven. With double-glazing and central heating the barn conversion puts on a different hat – the exposed pine beams, that in summer feel cool and refreshing, become in winter, warm and cosy. We often get snow in winter and the nearest downhill ski resort is just 45 minutes drive and there is even an artificial slope there, should the weather not oblige!! Closer to home you can cross country ski or sledge down the nearby hills (a favourite past time with the locals). For those days when you just don’t want to budge, there’s French TV, video or DVD. Salins les Bains has a hole in the wall DVD dispenser. There is also a CD player and radio. Plus some games to wile away those lazy afternoons.

Please contact us for more details and for our website address.

Other Activities: rock climbing, spa, quad bikes, adventure park, forest walks, salt works, cave tours, discovery trails, waterfalls, pot holing, kayaking etc

Our first visit to the Jura region and this lovely barn conversion couldn't have been better situated for an introduction to the area. Close to Salins-les-Bains, a delightful town with all the amenities required and just minutes from the local Super-U! Jenny and Lou are so lucky to live here and their enjoyment shows through in the way have made this place so nice and welcoming (as do their many pets!).

Be sure to tour the many local villages which, in August, were bedecked with flowers and don't miss a visit the Source de Lison. We went up Mount Poupet nearby Salins and the views were magnificent (we thought we saw Mont Blanc...). The area is one of the greenest in France but we were blessed with excellent weather.

A daily joy was to see the soaring Buzzards above the gite as the valley updraft took them high into the blue sky. Why this area is not more visited (we saw perhaps 4 English cars in the week) is a mystery.

P'tit Blanc in Salins well worth a visit for a typically French meal with a range of menu prices. Also look out for the Pizzeria behind the tourist office (easy to miss).

If you want to be off the beaten track, this is your place, but the best of it, it is less than 10 mins (by car) to great supermarket and nearest town. It is so peaceful, and there are plenty of walking opportunities, and a great base for touring the Jura region.

The owners have provided a lovely well equipped property, which is spotlessly clean and they supply excellent written info on places to visit.

So good we would return.

The Old Stone Barn

In all our years of travelling to most areas of France we have never yet come across such a beautiful and well equipped gite. You name it and it is there and such a warm welcome from Jenny and Lou. What incredibly awe-inspiring scenery and totally unspoiled. This is one of France's best kept secrets. Can recommend Le Petit Blanc in Salins-les-Bains -try the tartiflette, a local dish of cheese, bacon and potatoes - you won't need a starter or a dessert after this! Had a great day in Beaune, a must fore all amateurs du vin. Don't miss L'Hospice de Beaune.
There are so many suggestions for visits and trips in Jenny's superb guide you will be spoiled for choice. Hope you enjoy your stay as much as we did.

Garden Apartment

Review Submitted: May 6, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
As a couple interested in hill walking and the enjoyment of the French environment, the property provided us with complete satisfaction. It is in excellent order and we found everything that we could have wished for in a rural retreat.
The proprietors are friendly and helpful without being in any way obtrusive.
The domestic animals are calm and cause no disturbance - we found their company a pleasure.
We greatly appreciated the work that has gone into the provision of a guidebook to local attractions and features.
The setting is quiet but with easy access by car to local shops and restaurants.
The countryside is beautiful and we would have no hesitation in recommending this holiday destination for comfort, tranquility, enjoyment of open air activities and as a base for touring.
