Biarritz area. Charming apartment with stunning sea views
This is a lovely modern apartment on the first floor of an old Basque house, Maison Erremunenia, in the charming sea-side village of Guethary, 8 kms from Biarritz to the north and 5kms from St. Jean de Luz to the south. It is a spacious 1 bedroom apartment with truly stunning views directly onto the sea and the coast towards Biarritz. The local beach is minutes away and the fabulous surfing beaches of the Pays Basque coast are all easily accessible. The large ' L' shaped lounge, with it's American kitchen, is stylishly furnished with modern furniture and fittings of greater quality than is normal for holiday accommodation. There is a balcony looking onto the sea for 'al-fresco' dining on those balmy days which are typical of so much of the year in this area. The apartment is tiled throughout with high quality ceramic floor tiles and both the living area and the bedroom have breathtaking views onto the Atlantic with Biarritz in the distance.

Guethary is a charming sea-side village set in the Pays Basque on the coast between Biarritz (8kms) and St.Jean de Luz (5kms). It is about 20 kms from Spain, and only 30 mins drive from the wonderful coastal city of San Sebastian. The nearest airport is Biarritz, about 8kms or 15 mins drive from the village. The Biarritz area is famous for mile after mile of spectacular beaches, its surfing, golf, cuisine and, of course the Pyrenees; these dominate the skyline and offer some of the most breathtaking scenery in Europe. Walks, from short hour- long treks to hiking for several days are possible. Guethary itself has everything you need if you choose to stay in the village - shops, restaurants and beaches. The choice of restaurants in this area is vast and will suit all budgets. The regional cooking uses the wonderful local fish and shows a Spanish influence in some restaurants; in fact, just over the border you also have the choice of fine Spanish restaurants and Tapas bars.
Local activities diving, surfing, swimming, tennis, walking, sailing, cycling, fishing, horse riding, golf, wind-surfing, water skiing, roller blading

| Notes: | The balcony enjoys spectacular sea views up the coast to Biarritz. There is a wrought iron table with matching chairs. This apartment is also frequently used by the owners and therefore is equipped and maintained to a higher standard than normal holiday accommodation; amongst other things, a good selection of books, CD's and films on DVD will be left for you to enjoy. The Hi-Fi is of very good quality. The TV is portable size with a boosted internal aerial; television reception in this area is not always good. This is a very comfortable apartment for two, with everything you will need in order to enjoy your stay in this wonderful area to the full. There is parking for one car only in the communal driveway. The apartment is close to the little local station of Guethary which means there is some noise from the trains for a few minutes a day; this does also mean, however, that you can hop on a local train and be in St Jean de Luz in 5 minutes. |
The Region
Three beautiful towns are within a few kilometres: Bayonne, built on two rivers - its magnificent ancient cathedral overlooking the winding medieval streets; fashionable and glamorous Biarritz, famous for its shopping, restaurants and surf, and boasting one of the finest seafronts in France; historic St Jean de Luz, the most typical and charming of the Pays Basque seaside resorts with its glorious sandy beach and picturesque fishing port. The Pyrenees with their unbeatable mountain scenery, old Basque villages and wildlife are just a short drive away. They will transport you into a rural heaven as beautiful as anywhere in Europe. The most local peak, La Rhune, can be scaled with the help of an old mountain railway, offering views at the summit to take your breath away. The city of Pau is an important centre for skiing and is about an hours drive away. It is possible to ski in the morning and be on the beach in the afternoon at certain times of the year.
Local Information
The Pays Basque is known to have a warm climate with much sunshine in the winter; T shirts are possible even in February and November and hardy locals swim in the sea throughout the year. This area tends to avoid aggressively hot summer temperatures by the coast, but the sea can become very warm, particularly in more protected bays such as Saint Jean de Luz.
Spain
Being so close to the Spanish border opens up a different world of culture, gastronomy and architecture. The old Spanish town of Hondarribia (Fuenterrabia) can be reached by a charming 5 minute ferry ride from Hendaye or by car (25 mins drive from Guethary). This old town, with its castle and old church is famous for its many tapas bars - the locals seem to spend all day eating, drinking and socialising. San Sebastian, for many one of the most sophisticated and architecturally beautiful cities in Spain, has a glorious esplanade looking onto golden sands and blue sea. A stroll around the old city will show you that, here as well, tapas is a way of life. However, for those who think to book well in advance San Sebastian offers one of Spain's finest and best known restaurants, Arzac. Within 2 hours you can drive to Bilbao, most famous nowadays for the truly remarkable Guggenheim Museum, a triumph of contemporary architecture unrivalled throughout the world.
