This is a delightful small newly furnished bungalow for 4 people. It has one double bedroom and one twin bedroom, separate toilet and shower room, fully equipped kitchen and lounge, and an enclosed garden with patio table & chairs. Situated on the waterfront in the picturesque fishing village of Port Maubert, 'Gite Gilead' is in an ideal location to rest and unwind. Close to the Gironde estuary with its pretty ports the village’s renowned riverside restaurant “L Ecluse” is next door. The beaches of Royan, Meschers and St George de Didonne are only 20 minutes away. The Charente has the second highest number of sunshine hours in France (after Cote d’Azur) with temperatures reaching the high 30’s in July and August.

Known locally as the 'Côte de Beauté', this stretch of coast where the Gironde meets the Atlantic is popular for its calm waters and soft sand. The village of Meschers is 15 minutes by car and offers several sandy coves or longer stretches of beach, ideal for swimming and sunbathing, with restaurants close at hand. Continuing up the coast, there are beautiful beaches at the towns of St Georges de Didonne and Royan, as well as the wilder dunes and pine forests of the Côte Sauvage. Closer to home, one of France's prettiest villages, Talmont, can be reached in 20 minutes by car. There are spectacular views of the Estuary from cycle routes along the coast, or from cliffs at nearby Mortagne where there are a number of restaurants beside the attractive marina. Seafood is a speciality of this region and it is also a great opportunity to learn more about wine, cognac and pineau – all of which are produced locally.

Other Attractions: The thriving town of Royan offers a good selection of shops, restaurants and excellent covered market. During summer there are a number of activities on the beach, including free evening concerts and firework displays. The famous zoo of La Palmyre is nearby, where you are actively encouraged to feed the animals with popcorn! A little further up the coast you can explore the pretty oyster villages around Marennes, visit the old fortified town of Brouage out in the marshes, or drive across the bridge to lovely Île d’Oleron. For wine-lovers, there are regular car ferries across to the Médoc and those famous Bordeaux vineyards and chateaux; otherwise a day can be happily spent visiting the town and distilleries in Cognac.

Heritage: This area is steeped in history, with several Roman sites and many artefact's on display in the town of Saintes. The pretty Romanesque churches in local villages are testimony to the fact that this was once a route for pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. For those who like romantic places, the Château de la Roche-Courbon has a lovely garden, which gave rise to it being called the “Castle of the Sleeping Beauty”.
