The perfect setting for both family and activity holidays Le Chalet du Lac is a new waterfront eco wooden chalet thoughtfully positioned around a private stretch of water, approximately 20 metres from huge freshwater Lake Hourtin and within a very short walk from L'Isle aux Enfants (Children's Island), beautiful sandy beaches, Hourtin Port and its Marina. The huge sandy beaches of the Atlantic Silver coast are also just a 10 minute drive away. Downstairs a spacious deck links the house to the water on one side (al fresco dining) with another private garden the opposite end of the house, also with a large area of decking. The comfortable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area overlooks the water - just right for both relaxation and entertaining. The double bedroom downstairs has an en-suite shower room and the two spacious upstairs bedrooms share a family bathroom. All furniture and fittings were new in 2006.

Car: recommended
Cycling and watersports are a key feature of the area. Lake Hourtin is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Europe and cycle paths are everywhere. A wonderful car-free children's island is a few minutes walk as well as a small mountain-bike course fashioned from the local sandy terrain. The Port with its shops and restaurants is just a 10 minute walk and Hourtin town a 5 minute car-ride. The Medoc vineyards and famous chateaux are 15-30 minutes by car and Bordeaux, with its beautiful architecture, pedestrian shopping, riverside cafes and space-age trams, is an hour's drive. To the north Le Verdon has regular ferries to Royan and to the east Lamarque to Blaye (ancient citadel). To the south Lacanau is 25k and its beach is famous for world surfing contests. Golf du Medoc is also within easy reach for golfing enthusiasts and the famous Bay of Arcachon and the huge Dune de Pyla are well worth a visit.

Friends, couples and groups: Le Chalet du Lac is the perfect place for outdoor activities with modern-day home comforts. The rooms are designed to be flexible to accommodate friends, couples or groups of 6 adults as well as families with small or larger children. Bikes can be rented locally and most water sports are catered for. Fishing is also an important sport in this area, subject to local licences.

Adult activities: The local town of Hourtin has a variety of shops including a hotel, bar, fishmonger, butcher, baker, wine merchant and supermarket. Wine lovers will enjoy exploring the Route des Chateaux and seeing the famous Margaux producers as well as Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Pichon Longueville and a host of other well-known names. Bordeaux's beautiful Theatre has recently been restored and stages many operas and ballets. The Sunday flea market at St Michel is worth a visit for those hunting for a bargain as well as enjoying the fascinating antique arcades which surround the square. The newly-restored customs warehouses (Les Quaies) alongside the river Garonne become very lively at the weekend and have a diversity of cafes, restaurants and shops. From Bordeaux one can take a visit to other vineyards at St Emilion and the hilly vineyards on the right side of the river as well as the sweet white wine vineyards on the left side.

Travelling tips: By car - the nearest ferry port is St Malo and the drive takes about 6 hours from the port to Hourtin via Bordeaux. From Calais or Boulogne the journey is about 9 hours. A new motorway via Rouen makes the journey simple and there are plenty of good-value hotels near to the motorway exits usually just before or after a large town if an overnight stop is needed. By air - Bordeaux Merignac is a lovely airport and has regular flights from Gatwick, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin. By train - TGV from Paris to Bordeaux takes about 3 hours or from London one can change at Lille to continue to Bordeaux

To call it a Chalet doesn't really do it justice and we loved the place from the minute we arrived. Just about every need is catered for in a clean, spacious and well maintained property. We are a family of 4 so it was luxury for us and ideal for the two kids.

The terrace overlooking the lake is fantastic and that's probably where we spent most of our time, eating, drinking and watching the wildlife.

A large childrens park nearby is a bonus as well as the proximity of the port of Hourtin which we were able to cycle to each day to buy bread and cakes.

We spent a lot of time exploring the local beaches and even found a large Aqua parc in Archachon which is ideal for a family day out.

A relaxing holiday that I would recommend to anyone.

Our stay at the Chalet by the Lake

We stayed in the Chalet, my wife and I, with our In-Laws during August of this year(2009). I felt we were staying in somebody's own home. It was very well equipped, spotlessly clean and we thoroughly enjoyed our week there.
Te lake and marina a short walk away provided endless daytime and evening strolls and the opportunity to eat out or have an early evening drink and later watch the sun going down across the lake.
We did not venture out around the local area as it was to be a very relaxing holiday but did visit the beach on a number of days.
The beach is spectacular and having travelled to many different parts of the world I would rate it as second to none.
Thanks again Tony and Hilary for the 'loan' of your beautiful house.

We will return again one day, hopefully !!!!!

As soon as we arrived at le Chalet du Lac we felt relaxed and comfortable. The chalet is designed and furnished with easy holiday living in mind and was very clean, tidy and well maintained.
There is a terrace at the front which gets all the morning sun and is a great spot for breakfast, and the large, lakeside terrace at the rear soon became a favourite place for us to chill for the rest of the day.
It was great to cycle or walk the short distance to the port for bread ,a coffee or a drink and the lakeside beach was safe and inviting, with a watersports centre,restaurants and bars.
The area is fairly flat making it ideal for cycling and walking. The sandy beaches seemed to go on for ever and were within easy reach , as were the many vineyards if you fancy some wine tasting.
Hourtin itself is a lovely little town and market day was a joy.
Am looking forward to going back .

Waterside Chalet

We spent a fantastic holiday here this year. The chalet is spotlessly clean, very well appointed and has a very spacious feel to it. The setting is idyllic overlooking a little lake. The terrain is flat and very pretty, ideal for relaxing walks and cycling. Although we were a group of 6 mature adults we feel that the place would be equally perfect for families too. We could not fault a thing and would not hesitate to recommend this property to friends and family.

Relaxing Lakeside Holiday

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2 week stay at Hourtin Port, we made full use of the cycles there, the cycling is mainly on the flat on purpose built cycle paths around the lake. We cycled 20 miles relatively easily one afternoon, right around the north end of the lake.

One of our favourite pastimes was to walk down to the port, about 10 minutes away & have coffee or lunch at the Bar du Port, they made us very welcome.

Another time we drove towards Carcans Plage, at the south end of the lake. We stopped at Maubuisson for lunch on the way, we picked a restaurant that the French were using, in the middle of the semi circle at the end of Maubuisson, we had the last table, the lunch & the occasion was brilliant.

Hourtin is well placed to have whatever holiday you want, there is something for everybody, plenty to do & see, we were never bored. We are looking forward to 2009.

The chalet is well maintained, clean & tidy & we would not hesitate to recommend it.
