The perfect setting for both family and activity holidays Le Chalet du Lac is a modern waterfront eco wooden chalet thoughtfully positioned around a private stretch of water, approximately 20 metres from Lake Hourtin itself and within a very short walk from L'Isle aux Enfants (Children's Island), beautiful sandy beaches, Hourtin Port and its Marina. The huge sandy beaches of the Atlantic Silver coast are just a 10 minute drive away.

Downstairs a spacious west facing deck links the house to the water on one side (al fresco dining) with another private garden the opposite end of the house, also with a large area of decking. Perfect for breakfast in the morning sun. The comfortable open-plan living room, kitchen and dining area overlooks the water - just right for both relaxation and entertaining. The double bedroom downstairs has an en-suite shower room and the two spacious upstairs bedrooms share a family bathroom.

Car: recommended

Cycling and watersports are a key feature of the area. Lake Hourtin is one of the largest freshwater lakes in Europe and cycle paths are everywhere. A wonderful car-free children's island is a few minutes walk as well as a small mountain-bike course fashioned from the local sandy terrain. The Port with its shops and restaurants is just a 10 minute walk and Hourtin town a 5 minute car-ride or 10-15 minute bike ride.

The Medoc vineyards and famous chateaux are 15-30 minutes by car and Bordeaux, with its beautiful architecture, pedestrian shopping, riverside cafes and space-age trams, is an hour's drive. To the north Le Verdon has regular ferries to Royan and to the east Lamarque to Blaye (ancient citadel). To the south Lacanau is 25k and its beach is famous for world surfing contests. Golf du Medoc is also within easy reach for golfing enthusiasts and the famous Bay of Arcachon and the huge Dune de Pyla are well worth a visit.

Additional information about rental rates

  • 30% non-refundable deposit payable on booking and the remaining 70% payable 8 weeks before rental period. £200 damage/loss deposit refunded one week after departure. Normal cleaning and fresh bed linen included in the price.
  • Cancellation policy

    Initial deposit is non-refundable. If a cancelled week can be re-let the full balance is refundable. If the week remains empty 60% of the total cost is refunded if the cancellation is between 6 - 8 weeks before start of holiday.
    4 - 6 weeks before 40% is refunded and a cancellation 4 weeks or less is non-refundable.

Friends, couples and groups: Le Chalet du Lac is the perfect place for outdoor activities with modern-day home comforts. The rooms are designed to be flexible to accommodate friends, couples or groups of 6 adults as well as families with small or larger children. A few bikes are provided or can be rented locally and most water sports are catered for. Fishing is also an important sport in this area, subject to local licences.

The Marathon du Medoc is held in early September and is a both entertaining and serious race.

Adult activities: The local town of Hourtin has a variety of shops including a hotel, bar, fishmonger, butcher, baker, wine merchant and supermarket. Thursday is market day plus Saturday in the summer. Wine lovers will enjoy exploring the Route des Chateaux and seeing the famous Margaux producers as well as Chateau Mouton Rothschild, Chateau Pichon Longueville and a host of other well-known names. Bordeaux's beautiful Theatre has recently been restored and stages many operas and ballets. The Sunday flea market at St Michel is worth a visit for those hunting for a bargain as well as enjoying the fascinating antique arcades which surround the square. The newly-restored customs warehouses (Les Quaies) alongside the river Garonne become very lively at the weekend and have a diversity of cafes, restaurants and shops. Arcachon, on its' Bassin, and the huge Dune du Pyla are an easy drive. Nearer seaside towns are Lacanau to the south and Soulac sur Mer to the north.

Travelling tips: By car - the nearest ferry port is St Malo and the drive takes about 6 hours from the port to Hourtin via Bordeaux. From Calais or Boulogne the journey is about 9 hours. A new motorway via Rouen makes the journey simple and there are plenty of good-value hotels near to the motorway exits usually just before or after a large town if an overnight stop is needed.

By air - Bordeaux Merignac has regular flights from Gatwick, Southampton, Bristol, Birmingham, Manchester and Dublin.

By train - TGV from Paris to Bordeaux takes about 3 hours or from London one can change at Lille to continue to Bordeaux

AUGUST 2011 FAMILY HOLIDAY

We had a great week with warm (hot) sunny weather most of the week The villa has plenty of space and is very clean with two bathrooms. Enjoyed the the lakeside deck for chilling out in the afternoon and eating in the evening. Having two boys, (12 and 16) the local area was great for them, particularly the skate park, as they are BMXers. Hourtin Plage is excellent and is a 20 minute drive down the road. It has a great beach and, even though it was the Atlantic, very warm water with great surf. We enjoyed the short walk to the 'port' in the evenings for a meal. The lake beaches were clean and sandy, suitable for smaller children and water sports. Bordeaux is definitely worth a trip (45 minutes drive). We did the park and ride on the tram, and needed more time to see all the buildings, museums etc. We would definitely go to the villa again and would recommend it to others.

Fantastic 2 weeks in Hourtin. Family of 4 (2 teenagers) took great advantage of the villa which is in an excellent location for the lake and local beaches. Sun on the deck for most of the day. This villa is a home from home as described by others (clean, tidy, great facilities). Weather in July was mixed but there's still plenty to do. We would definitely stay again.

Perfect for Families

Wonderful house in a great location, overlooking a shallow lagoon close to the shores of Hourtin Lac, on the outskirts of Hourtin Port. The cabin is really a home from home and the best equipped place we have ever stayed in. It a place where you feel instantly relaxed and at home and is especially perfect for families with young children. The Isle des Enfants is a short walk away and so is the lakeside beach, which is perfect for children and also for learning to windsurf as the lake is very shallow. The beaches at Hourtin Plage and Montilevet do need a car journey but are great for surfing and body boarding, with lifeguards keeping an eye on things. The house is a fantastic base for exploring the area and the Maisons du Lac have a peaceful, seductive feel. For the grown ups there's the extraordinary vineyards and wine hunting..... We will definitely be back soon.

A Home from Home (but sunnier!!)

You'll gather by now we had a great holiday - we have been going to France for 10 years now we would rate this chalet as the best.

Spotlessly clean, spacious and bright. Sky TV was a bonus to keep up-to-date for news/sport. You get free use of bikes (2 adult and 3 kids) which our kids (10 & 14) used daily to fetch fresh baguettes (still hot!) from port each morning. Route was via paths without need to go near any traffic so very safe. Morning deck was great for breakfast and afternoon/evening deck was very relaxing with some local wine overlooking the pond.

Both lake and sea beaches were excellent - lake was warmer and surf was fab. Port was charming with good selection of restaurants. Local markets were also good for fresh produce. Trip to Bordeaux was great with lots of shops (not cheap). The "Petite Train" was good value and an ideal way to take in the sights (leaflets in the red folder)

Highly recommended.

Hourtin Chalet is Perfect!

We had a fantastic time in Hourtin, the chalet is perfect for a family of 6 and great for little ones. Location is perfect for walking into the port and the village were all locals/seasonal workers are really friendly.
The Chalet was clean and tidy with comfortable dining lakeside and out the front.

Distance to Hourtin Plage is close (10 minutes by car) where the surf was excellent - heavy shore break! Very good for all surfers.

Bordeaux was great, only taking 45 minutes to get there - use the park and ride for 3 Euros for the day which also gets you a tram pass.

We would recomment the Chalet to any family and the region of Hourtin/medoc is perfect for all ages
