Atlantic Beach:
The Aquitaine coastline is a 100 mile stretch of soft golden sand from Bordeaux to the Spanish border and there are championship-standard surfing beaches at the neighbouring resorts of Hossegor and Seignosse. When the tide is turning, the breakers at Labenne are magnificent (for those who are confident in water). The beach is watched over by lifeguards throughout the summer and a green flag indicates that it is safe even for the tiniest tots to play safely in the shallows (as long as they are supervised by an adult). The beach is cleaned every day of high season.
Walking and Cycling :
For the more leisurely inclined, there are many forest footpaths around Labenne, whilst for those who seek a slightly faster pace bicycles may be hired locally. The riverside nature walk and cycle path from Labenne to Cap Breton is a delightful and safe route for all ages. This same woodland pathway has also been extended to the South and sightings of heron and kingfishers are common on the cycle ride to the nearby resort of Tarnos.
There is also a prestigious tennis club in Labenne where courts may be hired by the hour and, on the outskirts of the town, a riding stable offers lessons or 'hacks' depending on your standard. Finally the local game - pelotte is well worth watching especially at Grand Chistera standard.
Golf:
There are literally dozens of first class golf courses within a 45 min drive of Labenne. The nearest championship course is at Hossegor only 10min drive to the north. It is a par 71 links course established in 1930 and includes many challenging features. Slightly further north is Seignosse which frequently figures in the top 25 Courses in Europe. It threads its way through pine forests and cork groves over steeply undulating terrain and daunting water hazards.
The 'Golf Pass Biarritz' covers 5 major courses in the area: Le Phare in Biarritz itself, Seignosse & Moliets (within 30 mins drive up the coast) and Arcangues & Bassussarry a similar distance in the other direction (within 30 mins drive southwards). All are championship courses with many challenging features and interesting contoured greens (often multi-level). The European Challenge tour is an annual visitor to Moliets which is ranked amongst the top ten courses in France
There are two excellent nine hole courses within easy reach: one at Port d'Albret (30mins) which circumnavigates an inland lake and features many taxing long holes - and also has a 'fun' driving range (using 'floating range balls) directly across and into the water; the other at Ilbarritz with a huge range area and an exciting nine hole course with half the holes situated on the cliff side with magnificant views of the Atlantic and the other half (down a steep buggy track) at sea level and featuring many water hazards.
