Things to do: The wines here are arguably some of the best in France and certainly the cheapest - Madiran, Tursan, Jurancon (names to conjure with) and Armagnac without dissent the finest brandy in France and always served at Presidential dinners. There are many small producers around who will be happy to give you a tasting - or you can visit their centre at LaBastide d'Armagnac - a delightul old style fortified village If golf is your passion there are several excellent course within easy reach . Tennis and horse riding facilities are available nearby. Bikes can be hired locally. Lakes and streams abound if you're keen on fishing. Surrounded by famous and fabulous thermal spas - ideal for recuperating from over exertions or just winding down. The coast with miles of sand and some of the finest surfing in the world is about 1 1/2 hrs away at Biarritz. for the kids ;a working 19th century farming commune, the little train into the peaks of the Pyrenees and donkey riding in Gavarnie( Lourdes)
Things to see: Bayonne and Biarritz - These two great cities are a must. The religious mecca of Lourdes (set in the foothills of the Pyrenees) is only an hour away. If you enjoy architecture, local produce or fine restaurants, visit nearby Pau - - which boasts a TRULY magical food market. Pau was the ancient capital of Navarre, and its King Henry was born in the Chateau of Pau in 1553. The city still retains its old world charm, with its markets and squares alongside modern hustle and bustle Throughout the region during the summer even the smallest villages boast their festivals and sometimes even bullfights. Gascony is 'next door' to the intriguing and fascinating Basque country - a different language, a different cuisine, a different people - yet all part of France! A million secrets still waiting to unfold!
