La Chèvrerie, 3 self-catering cottages, sleep between 4/6 people with games room

3 self-catering cottages. Our cottages are situated in a small hamlet in Les Alleuds in the Charente-Poitou region very close to the historical town of Melle. They were Farm Cottages for the goat farm which was originally on site. With ancient exposed stone walls and wooden beams, our cottages provide modern convenience and old world charm.

Completed self-contained cottage with its own front door, full of character with original stone walls, beams and a stone sink with a bulls eye window feature. French TV, DVD player and a wood burning stove and a well equipped kitchen. 1 double and 1 twin bedroom and a shower room with a modern suite. Towels and linen are provided for our guests. Baby equipment on request. Outside:- Own patio, garden furniture and own barbecue. Spacious garden. There is also a separate laundry room with washing machine, etc. A wet room with a bath if required for young children. We have a games room with table football and English TV. Outside there is a 10m X 5m in-ground Heated Swimming Pool (Heated from May until September) and table-tennis for everyone to use and a 4 person steam Sauna.

The property is situated in a small hamlet between Sauzé-Vaussais and the historic town of Melle, an hour from La Rochelle, Poitiers and Angouleme.

Chaignepain is ideal for cycling and walking along meandering lanes past small vineyards, fields of sunflowers and maize, taking in panoramic views of the region. The way of life in this area is so rural and unhurried that it gives the impression of going back through time. The total absence of any light pollution, means that at night you can look up to an astonishingly crisp and clear sky and enjoy a glorious display of stars. Chaignepain is very well placed for visits to Cognac, La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Chauvigny, Venise-verte, Futuroscope at Poitiers and the local historic town of Melle. We benefit from living in the region that is recognised as the 2nd sunniest in France.

Additional information about rental rates

  • In winter there is a small charge for heating and logs.

    A deposit of 20% will be taken on booking with the security/damaged deposit of £150 and then the full balance at least a week before arrival ,the security/damage deposit will be refunded within 2 weeks after your stay if no breakages.


    Cleaning charge £50 paid with the balance at least a week before arrival.
    If the Gite is left in a reasonable condition the cleaning charged will be re-embursed with the security deposit after your holiday.

    All bed linen and towels are provided for the gite, but please bring your own towels for the swimming pool, beach etc.

Attractions: In the Historic Town of Melle which is only 15 minutes drive away, there are Mines d'Argent (Silver Mines), Deux Arboretums ( There are 2 walks through the town ), Roman Monuments and 3 roman Churches for you to explore. At Chauvigny an hour away there is a Medieval City and a truly unique spectacle of amazing birds of prey from all corners of the earth; Les Géants du Ciel. If you would like to swim in the local Lakes there is Lambon 40 minutes away and St Macoux which is 20 minutes with lifeguards or there are outdoor Swimming Pools at Melle, Sauzé-Vaussais or Lezay all 15 minutes away. For the children La Vallee des Singes (Monkey Valley) and L'ile aux Serpents (Snake Island) are 40 minutes away. The canal system of the Venise-Verte makes a lovely day out, just an hour away, where you can punt or just walk.

More to do: A must for the adults is a visit to Cognac where you can go on a guided tour and taste the local Brandy or just explore the lovely town with your children. The theme park of Futuroscope at Poitiers gives a whole new perspective on the Cinema. Don't leave before the night time show! All the local Towns have a market on different days of the week where you can savour the French way of life.

Wonderful Holiday

We thoroughly enjoyed our week break at 'Le Chevrerie' we stayed in the Saanen Gite which has been excellently renovated and is equipped with everything you could possibly want - as are the other Gites (we had a look at them all and were very impressed), Tania, Mike and Keenan are excellent hosts and the home grown produce is wonderful. We look forward to returning, Highly recommended,

Another fantastic holiday

This is our second year at La Chevrerie and it was as lovely as last. Once again Tania and Mike provided everything we needed (and more) and were always on hand to help and advise on the area if needed. This year we enjoyed home grown fresh fruit, veg, meat and honey which was lovely.
The gites are beautifully rennovated and finished to a very high standard with lovely - and private - outside areas where we bbqed every night.
The immediate area is fairly quiet but there's lots to do within driving distance. This year we went canoeing, on a velo-rail, visited Chauvigny (well worth a trip!), Futuroscope. Rest of the time we spent relaxing by the pool and cycling around the wonderfully flat countryside (Thanks for T&M for the loan of your bikes).
Hard to believe now, that as this holiday approached we were begining to wonder whether we had made a mistake revisiting the same place twice. At the end of the holiday we were trying to work out how we can fit in another visit next year. Highly recommend it.

What a wonderful holiday!

We spent 2 weeks at the Saaen gite and have a wonderful time. The place is really relaxing and peaceful but still with lots to keep the children entertained. Or daughters (5 and 2) loved the pool, the outdoor space and of course the rabbits! The gite itself was very well-equipped and as other reviews say they pictures don't do it justice. There are lots of good places to explore (most less than 1 hour away) and the beaches around La Rochelle were great for the whole family. We were made to feel really welcome by Mike and Tania, thank you for such a lovely holiday!

Wonderful holiday!

My husband, two boys and I have just returned from our holiday in the Rove gité and we can't praise it highly enough. The git?s are beautifully renovated and as previous reviewers have said, he and Tania really have thought of everything.

The git?s are perfect to relax in the peace and quiet - they are very cool in the hot weather and the pool is wonderful for dipping in and out of.

My kids found the playground equipment great fun. There are swings, slide, playhouse with little play kitchen and dining set, skittles and also table tennis and table football in the games room which is situated between the git?s and the main house. Oh and wifi is in the games room for the techies! They've thought of everything!

There are animals to feed in Mike and Tania's field which our kids loved and the gardens are beautiful for the adults to sit in with a cheeky glass of wine while the kiddies play.

To be honest we didn't go out and about in the car much as we were there to relax but did go out for a few walks and the area is very beautiful and also very friendly.

All in all, a fab holiday and we will most definitely return!

Fantastic fortnight in Rove

Just returned from two great weeks staying in Rove with our two children (aged 16 & 12). The accommodation, facilities, and overall setting are all super. The gite was very clean, renovated to a high standard and had everything we needed.

Plenty of room outside for alfresco dining but with privacy maintained. Having a heated pool metres from the front door and large gardens was just great.

Nothing was too much trouble for Mike and Tania, including recommending local restaurants and organising provisions for us as we arrived quite late on the first night.

The surrounding area is lovely and definitely the sunflower capital of the world! Good local markets, and Cognac, Poitiers, the Marais Poitevin, and Futuroscope are all within easy reach, and when combined with spending lazy days by the pool, it all made for a great holiday.

Would definitely hope to return.
