3 self-catering cottages. Our cottages have been awarded 2 keys by Clévacances and are situated in a small hamlet in Les Alleuds in the Charente-Poitou region very close to the historical town of Melle. They were Farm Cottages for the goat farm which was originally on site. With ancient exposed stone walls and wooden beams, our cottages provide modern convenience and old world charm.

Self contained cottage with its own front door, full of character with all original stone walls, a stone sink with a bulls eye window feature, a potage and beams. Upstairs 1 double bedroom, 1 twin bedroom. a single room and a shower room. Downstairs a French T V and DVD player and a lovely wood burning stove and a well equipped kitchen. All towels and bed linen are provided for our guests. Baby equipment on request. Outside:- Own patio with garden furniture and own barbecue also a spacious garden. There is also a laundry room with washing machine etc, and a wet room with a bath if required for young children. We have a games room with table football and English TV. Outside there is a 10m X 5m in-ground Heated Swimming Pool (Heated from May until September) and table-tennis for everyone to use and a 4 person steam sauna.

The property is situated in a small hamlet between Sauzé-Vaussais and the historic town of Melle, an hour from La Rochelle, Poitiers and Angouleme. Chaignepain is ideal for cycling and walking along meandering lanes past small vineyards, fields of sunflowers and maize, taking in panoramic views of the region. The way of life in this area is so rural and unhurried that it gives the impression of going back through time. The total absence of any light pollution, means that at night you can look up to an astonishingly crisp and clear sky and enjoy a glorious display of stars. Chaignepain is very well placed for visits to Cognac, La Rochelle, Ile de Re, Chauvigny, Venise-verte, Futuroscope at Poitiers and the local historic town of Melle. We benefit from living in the region that is recognised as the 2nd sunniest in France.

Attractions: In the Historic Town of Melle which is only 15 minutes drive away, there are Mines d'Argent (Silver Mines), Deux Arboretums ( There are 2 walks through the town ), Roman Monuments and 3 roman Churches for you to explore. At Chauvigny an hour away there is a Medieval City and a truly unique spectacle of amazing birds of prey from all corners of the earth; Les Géants du Ciel. If you would like to swim in the local Lakes there is Lambon 40 minutes away and St Macoux which is 20 minutes with lifeguards or there are outdoor Swimming Pools at Melle, Sauzé-Vaussais or Lezay all 15 minutes away. For the children La Vallee des Singes (Monkey Valley) and L'ile aux Serpents (Snake Island) are 40 minutes away. The canal system of the Venise-Verte makes a lovely day out, just an hour away, where you can punt or just walk.

More to do: A must for the adults is a visit to Cognac where you can go on a guided tour and taste the local Brandy or just explore the lovely town with your children. The theme park of Futuroscope at Poitiers gives a whole new perspective on the Cinema. Don't leave before the night time show! All the local Towns have a market on different days of the week where you can savour the French way of life.

Wonderful gite and pool

We had a wonderful two-weeks in the Gite. It was clean and well kept, it felt like we were one of the first people to stay there. The pool was fantastic too, sparkling new and just the right size. The daily delivery of croissants and bread was great. Supermarket a short drive away. We were surprised to find how much there was to do in the area - Venise Vert was well worth the hour in the car, also Futuroscope, and La Rochelle. As the weather was so good we didn't need to venture out much, and also enjoyed the ping pong and table football, even better at no extra charge! Mike and Tania were always about to solve any problems and ask any questions.

It might have been aided by the constant hot, dry and sunny weather but this seems like an idyllic place to spend two weeks every year.

We have just returned from a weeks stay at Poitevine La Chevrerie. The gites were beautifully restored and spotlesly clean. Mike Tania and their family were perfect hosts always on hand if you needed any information, but also respected your privacy. The pool was fantastic to cool off when the weather was hot, also lots of safety features around the pool for anyone with children. The welcome pack was excellent never had anything as good before. Lovely countryside and peaceful surroundings. Mike & Tania will let you use their bikes at no extra charge. There is plenty for children to do, lots of animals table tennis and table football to keep them entertained with a very large garden for them to play. Thank you Mike Tania & family.

Poitevine - a beautifully finished gite!

We were very pleasantly surprised, after some previous less than happy gite experiences elsewhere, when we went into this beautifully restored cottage in Mike and Tania's complex. Mike and Tania have designed and built it themselves with a high degree of skill. The kitchen is very attractive with hand-made units and spacious cooker and refrigerator. Tania has a policy of replacing items carefully, unlike our previous experience where owners had mis-matched cutlery and crockery. Everything is just as you would want in your own home - surely a priority for any of us on holiday?!
They had thought of everything to make our stay a time to remember - and repeat! A welcome pack, fresh eggs from poultry reared on the site, daily bread deliveries,and even wood for the log fire, should you be there, like us, late season when the nights can turn cool.
The cottage surroundings are pretty with flowery bowers and terrace beds and the pool is a delight (and secure; if you are worried about pool safety, be assured that Mike has followed all the rules and regulations .
An added bonus - ask Mike and Tania if their daughter can bake you a cake too! Scrumptious!
We will definitely be back!
