The most tranquil setting in the Vendee. In the unspoilt and picturesque Venise Verte our newly converted gites enjoy the prettiest of locations set in 8 acres of land, flanked by woodlands and criss-crossed by green carpeted waterways. The area has been called a painter's landscape and benefits from the warm and sunny micro climate of the region. The three terraced cottages each have their own private patio and garden which leads down to the river. The fourth gite is part of the main house but also benefits from a private entrance and its own garden edged by one of the area's many waterways. The shared 10m x 5m pool is heated and looks out over grass and woodlands. For the active, there are numerous walks through the marais or a selection of bikes for cycling. We have a boat available for fishing in the river at the bottom of the garden and table tennis, badminton and darts are all available on site. The coast is 35 minutes away as is La Rochelle and the pretty Ile de Re.

Attached to the main house this is a newly converted gite which has its own private garden area. Double doors lead to the patio and there is a small waterway at the end of the garden. The living room looks out over gardens and the river. The open plan kitchen is modern, with an oven, fridge and washing machine. There is a large bedroom, also with views onto the garden and river. The gite has its own patio and barbecue. There is access to the river for fishing or for use of the boat. The heated swimming pool is a short walk away.

The local village, Nalliers, which is about 1.5 miles away, dates from Roman times with a 12th century church, small supermarket, bars, restaurant, bank, post office, hairdressers, chemist, bakers and dress shop. The gites are located in the middle of the Venise Verte with its pretty waterways and wildlife. The superbly attractive Atlantic port, La Rochelle, is 35 minutes away as well as the beautiful island of Ile de Re. The whole area is famous for its oysters, sunflowers and long sandy beaches. 15 minutes from the gites you can find the impressive Forest of Mervent with its lake and the medieval town of Vouvant. Nearest country towns to us are Lucon (15 minutes) and Fontenay le Comte (20 minutes) both worth a visit, particularly for their mid week and Saturday markets. Other places to see are Coulon where you can take a boat to explore the pretty waterways in the Venise Verte, le Puy de Fou with its spectacular Son et Lumiere and Futuroscope, about an hour's drive away.

Spent a wonderful week with Paddy and Harry. One of the best holidays we've had in a long time. A beautifully secluded retreat staying in first class accommodation.
Will hoefully return sometime in the near future.
