La Blanchetterie is a beautiful charentaise farmhouse and gite set in the quiet village of Chenac, facing south with fantastic views of the Gironde estuary, just 10 minutes from the nearest beach of Meschers. Complete with pool, the property is set in an acre of garden, surrounded by vineyards and sunflowers. The adjoining village of St Seurin d'Uzet used to be the centre of caviar production in France. The region is famous for not just caviar, but oysters, wine and cognac. The property has been restored to keep a lot of the original features, including exposed beams and stone fireplaces. Each house is well equipped, all linen and bath towels are provided. The owners, Katie and Mike Harrington, live at the property in a converted barn behind the house and are at hand to answer any questions, and maybe take you on a tour of a working vineyard for those who are keen to do a bit of tasting, including the local Pineau.

Built in around 1900, the house has been decorated to a high standard and is very spacious. Downstairs is a big open plan well-equipped kitchen and dining room with a very large living room next door with french doors out to the garden and pool. Upstairs there are two double rooms and one twin all with fabulous views. There is a large family bathroom with bath and walk-in shower.

Chenac is situated in a great location with something for everyone. There are fantastic beaches, the closest, Meschers, being just 10 mintues away, St Georges de Didonne 15 minutes and Royan 20 mintues, and all with a variety of water sports. There are a selection of great golf courses at Saintes, Royan, Cognac and La Rochelle. Anyone who like walking and cycling there are endless trails to follow with plenty of birds watching and wild life to sport. And of course endless chances to sample the wines and cognac of the region. Of course should you wish to you can simply laze about by the pool and enjoy the peace. The very pretty ports of Mortagne and Les Monards are very close by with their choice of restaurants and bars to sample the local cuisine. There are also weekly markets selling lots of fantastic local produce. The historic towns and cities of Bordeaux, Saintes, Cognac and La Rochelle are all worth a visit and the Medoc can be accessed by ferry from Royan.

What a fantastic week - weather brilliant (too hot sometimes, if that is possible). Thanks Katie and Mike for sharing your home with us - it is lovely.

What a fantastic two weeks. The weather has been great. The kids have spent most of the holiday in the pool. Cognac, the zoo, La Rochelle all well worth a visit. The most enjoyable part has been the excellent bike rides to Talmont, Mortagne and Port Maubert. Finally a very big thank you to Mike and Katie who have been excellent hosts.

We have had a great time. We particularly enjoyed Katie cooking us a meal, Saintes, Le Chateua des Enigmes for the kids, Cozes market, bike ride to Mortagnes.

We had a really nice time again. The weather has been great and its been fun playing with Holly and Stevie. Katies cooking is really yummy!

Can't get any better

This was our second stay at La Blanchetterie - and this was the first time after 15 years of Gite type holidays in all parts of France that we went back to the same place. The reasons were simple - great house (we have stayed in both), great pool, great beaches, lovely envirnoment/weather and fantastic hosts.

Katie and Mike really showed us genuine hospitality - Mike is very good at topping up the wine glass and Katie's cooking is a real treat.

There is plenty to do but with 2 kids (under 10) we tended to be at the beach or near the pool.

A truely relaxing holiday - can't recommend it enough - we will go back again soon.

A great house with wonderful surroundings and exceptionally helpful and friendly hosts. Truly relaxing atmoshere with great local restaurants and facilities. I can not recommend this enough as a superb holiday choice. Thank you Katie and Mike for all your hospitality.

Probably the best kept secret in France

We've stayed with Katie and Mike on two occasions now and thoroughly recommend La Blanchetteire. With two small boys, it's perfect. The swimming pool is right by the door, Meschers beach is a short drive away and the local restaurants love children.
And don't dismiss the local wine just because it's incredibly cheap - it's also very good indeed...
